Shortcuts to areas of special interest
- Pat's father's Hanlon family.
- On Pat's mother's side of the family we recently found some long-lost cousins descended of old Irish aunts and uncles who emigrated to Butte, Montana in the pioneering 1880's. Their story - with photographs - is a remarkable tale of life in the mining towns: newfound wealth, mining tragedy and hardship, illegal drinking parlours, gold rush... with thanks to our cousins Charla, Judy and Marvine.
- My father's Bruinsma, De Vet & De Leeuw families all came from Friesland but met up in Amsterdam.
- My mother's McDonald family goes back to John McDonald of Argyllshire who emigrated to the USA c. 1752. Rereading some old family letters last year prompted a search for descendants of one W.A. McDonald who was mentioned in a letter of 1909. With the help of a headstone hunter volunteer in Ames, Iowa (thanks Roberta!) we found a whole new branch to the tree, illustrated with scanned pages from a gorgeous old family bible... thanks to cousins Diane & Janet.
