The Hawaiian Barbecue - 22nd July 2000

Pat's 40th birthday party was the culmination of a major covert operation. Because Pat knew NOTHING about it. The invitations had been mailed, phoned and emailed in stolen moments - anytime I could get to the PC or phone and Pat couldn't.

As the date got closer, and the numbers kept growing (over 50 confirmed guests!) panic started to set in. What to feed people? Where would they sleep? And how could I smuggle these vast quantities of food and beer into the house without doing myself an injury or arousing Pat's suspicion?

Having blown a month's wages on a giant new fridge the week before the party, I wondered if the game wasn't up when I innocently suggested that we really should buy some beer to put in it (and Pat should babysit!). After all, I don't drink beer. Arriving home with the car loaded to the roof with beer, I thought a lecture on household budgetting might be coming. The reaction? "Gosh darling, that was really thoughtful."
Bless him.
And then we had a party! With huge thanks to Shug & Davy.
