Family Scrapbook 1998

Jan-Feb 1998 - Loughanure, Ireland

Loughanure, Donegal, Ireland
31/1 - 2/2/98
We were all looking forward to our weekend trip to Donegal, but by the last days of January travel wasn't looking likely. Indigo's chest infection had suddenly escalated to daily hospital visits. But it was too late to cancel: Roisin and Galway had already left Scotland and were incommunicado without a phone in Ireland. So we agreed Andrew and I would go and Pat and Indy would stay behind in Brussels. To make things more interesting I managed to sprain an ankle on a molehill the morning before leaving, so had the pleasure of trying to keep up with Andrew alone on crutches. Uncle Jass's arrival later that evening saved the day, and he joined us for a thoroughly enjoyable long weekend in Ireland. Andrew loved it. Free to run at last!

May-June 1998 - California

Despite a hectic work schedule on my part, I couldn't pass up the invitation to Zelda's 60th birthday party in Los Angeles. I was managing a project for Procter & Gamble in Mechelen where we had to move 60 people into new offices in three weeks. A breeze, but for the small fact that there was a grass field where the offices had to come. Three intense weeks later I just about collapsed into the plane with Pat and the kids, more than ready for a holiday. But a few days R&R with Jasper in Hermosa Beach was a tonic, and Zelda's garden party was a huge success.

December 1998 - Christmas in Brazil

We arrived in Brazil on boxing day to spend the holidays with mum and Jasper. Mum had heard that the beach in Espirito Santo was a paradise for children with warm shallow water and only the smallest of waves. The directions were easy: take the motorway out of town and keep going for a couple of hours. What could be simpler? Nine hours of endless potty stops later we arrived. Not that we were that slow. Brazilians just have a different concept of time and distance. But it was worth it in the end. It was a weekend of uninterrupted sunshine with caipirinha cocktails and seafood for us, and unlimited sea and sand for the kids.
