Luftgaunachrichtenregiment Belgien - Nordfrankreich

As the above overview shows, the Luftaunachrichtenregiment Belgien-Nordfrankreich in June 1944 wasonly a shadow of what it used to be. In its heydays the regiment consisted ofno fewer than 6 battalions and was responsible for operating the Luftwaffe radar and radionavigation stations at the coast, as well as the many Flugwachen, i.e. the locations along the coasts where Luftwaffe soldiers were physically observing overflying aircraft. This situation was ended in April 1943, when these two missions were assigned to 2 different Luftwaffe units:
  • The operation of the Luftwaffe radar and radio navigation stations was entrusted to the Luftnachrichtenegiment 52, which in fact had already been established in April 1942..
  • The operation of the 'eyes and ears' physical observarion stations (Flugwachen) became the task of the old Luftgaunachrichtenregiment Belgien - Nordfrankreich.

The results of the physical bservations from the many Flugwachen along th coasts¨of Belgium and Northern France were colected and processed at so-called Flugwachkommandos or Fluko's . The number of these Flugwachkommandos was determined by the number of remaining Flugmeldereservekompanien i.e. 5. Thus, in June 1944, the following Flugwachkomandos existed:

  • Flugwachkommando 8 Reims
  • Flugwachkommando 9 Amiens (commanded by Hauptmann Busch?)
  • Flugwachkommando 10 Gent ((located in a former Belgian bunker in the Citadelpark in Gent)
  • Flugwachkommando 11 Lille
  • Flugwachkommando 12 Beauvais
  • Flugwachkommandso 13 Chauny
  • Flugwachkommando 14 Brüssel

Little is known about the organisation of these units. What we do know is that every Fluko consisted of a number of Flugwachen. These individual observation stations were coded with a nique number and a reference to the location of the Fluko. Thus the Flugwache GNT 14K was the 14th observation station of the Fluko Gent, which was located in Wn Baumbach, near Bray-Dunes.

A unique document with respect to the oragnisation of the Fluko 11 Lille is the one below. Based on an authentic German document, it details the Flugwachen in the area of the 18. Luftwaffenfelddivision, i.e. the Küstenverteidigungsabschnitt B:

The following Flugwachen are mentioned in the above document::

  • Flugwache Baumbach (GNT 14K)

  • Sanatorium Zuydcoote (Aussenstelle Kuckuck)

  • Flugwache St-Pol (Lil 1K)

  • Flugwache Petit Fort-Philippe (Lil 2K)

  • Flugwache Les Huttes d'Oye (Lil 3K)

  • Flugwache Les Hemmes (Lil 4K)

  • Flugwache Wormhout (Lil 24/Kdo)

In the above enumeration we believe th letter K to stand for Küste. Interestingly, the above also shows that the Fluko Lille consisted of at least 24 Flugwachen. In a German document the Zentrale 22 is mentioned on 23/5/1942, but is not cleear where this was located. The commander was possibly Leutnant Schumacher.

Another German document of 1 February1943 mentions the following Flugwachen in the KVA A2 as part of the Fluko 10 Gent:

  • Flugwache Nummer-Een (GNT 7) (9 Mann)

  • Flugwache Ijzendijke (GNT 7a) (8 Mann) (We believe the letter a to stand for Aussenstelle)

  • Flugwache Brügge (Brügge-Wasserturm) (8 Mann)
