The International Team Challenge is a 15mm DBM (De Bellis Multitudinis) tournament held every year since 1999 originally at the Château de Grandson on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland, close to the site of the famous battle between the Swiss and Burgundians in 1476.
The event was originally started by Phil and Karin Riley and Mike Bennett, to both publicize wargaming to Switzerland, and to make the most of the beautiful venue made available with the support of "les amis du Chateau de Grandson" (friends of the Chateau). Some of the ideas of format resulted from various conversations between myself and JD McNeil at the IWF championship in south Africa in 1999. The team format was chosen since it did not exist elsewhere, and in the early years space was too limited to open the event to all comers. The formula has proved so popular that it is now a fixture on the international circuit. It provides a fantastic opportunity to introduce new players to the DBM community, and publicize bodies such as the International Wargame Federation, the Society of Ancients and other international events.
In 2004 it moved to its new home the Lakenhalle Belfort, Gent (Ghent or Gand), Belgium, were it is hosted by the Red Barons Club in their beautiful medieval city. The location is well placed for travel connections (rail, car or airplane to Brussels or Charleroi). It also provides ample other interests: historical buildings, Belgium chocolate, Belgium beer, etc.
It is an international event for teams of four players. These players represent their country in competition against teams from other nations. Teams from every Wargaming country in the world have been invited to take part in the event. Popularity has increased year on year, with players traveling from Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. New nations which we did not know even played DBM when the event started in 1999 are now taking part.
In the first 1999 event, teams participated 5 countries: Belgium - France - Germany - Italy - UK, but popularity has grown, and to date 16 different countries have participated.
Thanks are due to the various organizations who have actively supported the event:
