The history of the Priory at Guilly
A nice house and his dependencies as well as the remains of what used to be a little chapel is known by the local people as “ le Prieuré “
The history of the “ Priory “ goes back to September 25 in 835 when king “ Charles le Chauve” allowed abbot Evrard of the Bourges abbey to take possession of some “Villae “
(properties) in the area of Guilly to help securing the needs of his abbey and its monks. The above name villae probably refers to some early roman settlements around Guilly
In the following years the monks of Saint Sulpice of Bourges founded the priory in Guilly under the name of “ Prieuré Saint Symphorien “ and started to cultivate the surrounding land . In the 12 th century a new chapel was built .
Archives of the 17 th century described the chapel and the buildings belonging to the abbey of Bourges and habited by its monks which again confirms the monastic activity in this period.
