"PORT OF FOLKESTONE NOT SOLD" The owners of Folkestone port have denied rumours that it has been sold.
There has been speculation in the town that the harbour was about to change
hands - and even the name of entrepreneur Richard Branson has been mentioned
- but the firm which holds the asset said there is nothing in the offing.
Steve Lawrence, a spokesman for Sea
Containers, said: "I don't know where this rumour has come from,
but there is something going around. But there is no truth in it. The port
is still for sale, although we are not actively marketing it. We have proposals
for a residential development there and we are talking to the council about
this, but if someone came along with an offer we would look at it."
Mr Lawrence would not reveal the value of the asset. He said this was "commercially
sensitive".

HOVERSPEED'S EASTER RE-OPENING DELAYED High speed car ferry operator Hoverspeed
is re-opening the Newhaven to Dieppe fast ferry service to provide
three return sailings a day. This is the fourth year that Hoverspeed
has operated the popular fast direct link to Normandy and the major new
feature for 2002 season is the re-introduction of a monohull Superseacat
craft to the route. The service was scheduled to operate from 22nd
March to 30th September but delays have meant the service will actually
start running on Monday 25th March. The Superseacat has capacity
for 145 vehicles and 700 passengers and at speeds of 38 knots will provide
a crossing time of just two hours. Sailing frequency will be up to three
return sailings daily between Newhaven and Dieppe. Features of the
service include a First Class lounge in the Newhaven departure terminal.
For an upgrade supplement of £25, passengers have access to an airport
style lounge, in addition to the exclusive First Class facilities of priority
boarding and unloading, including meals, drinks and newspapers on board.
It would appear from the availability check that the service from Ostend
to Dover will resume on Wednesday 27th March.

SHIPS ARE TO LOSE THEIR SEX The world shipping industry's newspaper, Lloyd's List, has decided that
from now on ships will lose their femininity and will be referred to as
"it," not "she." "We see it as a reflection of the modern business
of shipping," Julian Bray, the paper's editor, told the Financial Times
on Wednesday. "Ultimately they are commodities...not things
that have characters." It is not known how the habit of treating
ships as feminine began though it is a custom used mainly in English dominated
countries. Some believe it originates from the time ships would be
dedicated to a goddess whose figure was carved on the bow. Although
women were considered to bring bad luck at sea, mariners always use the
pronoun "she" when referring to their ships. Whether its proper name
is masculine, or whether it is a man o'war, a battleship, or a nuclear
submarine, a ship is always referred to as "she." One explanation
is that a ship was nearer and dearer to the sailor than anyone except his
mother. Vessels are also know to have "sister" ships. The U.S. Naval
Historical Center Web site says it is customary to classify things as feminine
"especially those things which are dear to us." Author Dr. Ronald
Hope says the tradition of referring to sailing vessels as "she" dates
back to the days of Ancient Greece. Hope, 80, a former director of the
UK-based Maritime Society, told CNN: "Ships have been 'she' since Greek
times. "Even as recently as the 19th century most of the sea shanties referred
to then as 'she' and I recall in my youth ships owners always telling stories
about why a ship was like a woman. "It's a shame that it is being changed.
Ships are mostly very individual and 'it' seems a bit impersonal."
Peter Goodwin, curator of HMS Victory at Portsmouth, on England's south
coast, said: "It's a terrible idea. "No ship is exactly the same
and all of them have their own characteristics. You ask any sailor and
they will tell you that you care for a ship, you tend to their needs and
sometimes they play you up. But they are never an 'it'." Pieter van
der Merwe, general editor at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich,
told the FT: "Culture is a question of continuing tradition and one should
preserve those inexplicable quirks. "It's not just a sentimental
thing; you lose a level of understanding unless you understand the language
of the time you're talking of." Have
look at the She/He/It Poll by CNN.

SEACATS CLAIM INCREASED SHARE Hoverspeed, operator
of cross-Channel Seacats, says it has defied the tourist downturn by grabbing
market share. While the overall market share has dipped by around 7.5 per
cent in the wake of the September 11 terrorist outrages, Hoverspeed said
it had gained between one and two per cent. The operator is
increasing peak season frequency, with up to 17 return sailings - 15 on
its Dover-Calais route and two on its Dover-Ostend service
- compared to 13 last year. Hoverspeed has also introduced an "at your
seat" meal and drinks service for all, not just first class passengers.
Company spokesman Nick Stevens said: "It does seem that the service we
have been providing and upgrading is something that people can sign up
to because they get the speed and new level of service."

SUSPENSION OF FREIGHT THROUGH THE TUNNEL MAY SIGNAL THE END FOR EUROTUNNEL AND BRITISH CONGESTION PLANS Fears are growing that the suspension of freight services through the Channel Tunnel may in the end be the undoing of Eurotunnel. The government's rail agency and national business leaders joined the chorus of anger over the closure of the Channel tunnel to rail freight on Friday. The Strategic Rail Authority said months of disruption and the total closure this week was "destroying" international rail freight. "It needs urgent action by the French authorities to police the terminal and its approaches before the damage become irreversible," the agency said. The call for action came as one freight terminal revealed it had been sold by its US owner and a logistics company warned that it could close as customers were switching permanently to road or sea because of the Channel tunnel problems. The suspension could also ruin plans by the British government to cut the number of lorries on Britain's roads. French operator SNCF has halted all freight services until further notice because of asylum seekers trying to board the trains at Calais. The British Government has set a target of moving 80% of road freight on to rail by 2010. But the cancellation of each freight train leads to 50 extra journeys by lorry. Britain's main freight operator, English Welsh Scottish railways (EWS), says it has lost customers "in droves" during five months of regular cancellations - putting up to 8,000 jobs at risk. And the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) is worried the government's 10-year transport plan and congestion-reduction targets have been thrown into doubt. It says businesses that usually use the tunnel to transport freight have had to use roads - adding to pollution and congestion. Head of freight at the SRA Julia Clarke told Today the tunnel service
was crucial "to persuade people moving cargos domestically and internationally
that they should look at rail". Transport minister John Spellar says
the government is pushing for the services to be resumed but is "not satisfied"
French authorities are doing enough to secure the freight terminal in Calais.
Thousands of asylum seekers have been able to breach the perimeter fence
as they try to board trains bound for Britain. Mr Spellar told the
BBC's Today programme there could be far-reaching effects on transport
policy. He said: "Once firms have decided to make a shift from rail
back to road, it is going to be difficult to move them again - particularly
as they will have had to sign contracts." Mr Spellar added: "Right
up to the Prime Minister, we have been raising this very vigorously with
the French Government."

MEER VRACHT VOOR FERRIES
MORE CHUNNEL FREIGHT FOR FERRIES Freight services through the Channel Tunnel have been suspended indefinitely
after repeated security problems at the freight yard on the French side.
More freight is hence being diverted to ferries at the ports of Calais,
Dunkirk, Ostend and Zeebrugge. A hundred and fifty asylum seekers
were arrested again Tuesday night by French police at Fréthun after
trying to stow aboard freight trains bound for Kent. British prime
minister Tony Blair is likely to raise the issue of Channel Tunnel security
with his French counterpart at this weekend’s EU summit in Barcelona in
a bid to stem the flow of illegal immigrants exploiting the rail link between
France and the UK.Indications that Mr Blair will privately urge the French
government to tighten security come after asylum seekers forced French
railway operator SNCF to indefinitely suspend freight services through
the tunnel yesterday. Freight trains have been targeted by growing numbers
of desperate refugees trying to get into Britain, with the problems focused
at a cargo terminal operated by SNCF at Fréthun, near Calais. The
French railway’s UK counterpart, freight operator EWS said yesterday that
the reason immigrants were targeting the Fréthun terminal was because
it lacked adequate security. According to the UK-based rail freight specialist,
SNCF employs only five security staff on permanent duty in the terminal,
backed by 15 French gendarmes during critical night time hours. The
British company has lost £6m ($8.58m) since last November and yesterday
warned that, unless the issue was addressed, its business will be destroyed.
“Questions need to be asked of the UK and French governments over why they
have permitted the suspension of a key trading route between Britain and
Europe, and what they will do to fully restore it,” said EWS chief executive,
Philip Mengel. He added that EWS was “gravely concerned” by the attitude
of SNCF and the French government. Mr Blair and senior British ministers,
including home office minister David Blunkett and transport minister Stephen
Byers, have previously urged the French government to tighten security
at rail terminals in and around Calais, but with few practical results
on the ground. A spokeswoman for No. 10 Downing Street yesterday said that
there were no official plans to raise the issue in Barcelona but would
not comment on what might be talked about on the sidelines of the summit.
But a well-placed government source told Lloyd’s List that Channel Tunnel
security was likely to be discussed privately as there is little evidence
of the problematic issue being resolved. “I would be very surprised if
it was not raised at Barcelona,” he said. “All the varied people will make
representations.” A home office spokesman added that there was “ongoing
dialogue” between the two countries but could not provide further detail.
Shippers, meanwhile, will have to wait to hear what measures are being
planned to enable freight services operated by EWS and SNCF to resume.
French transport, interior and defence ministers met with SNCF on Monday
night to discuss the situation but no concrete proposals have emerged.
“There is nothing we can say to our customers,” said EWS spokesman Graham
Meiklejohn. With adequate security measures, “this problem could be resolved
today,” he added. The Eurotunnel Shuttle is operating normally and
is not affected by the SNCF action.

CHANNEL TUNNEL PLANS GOODS TRAIN BAN TO COMBAT ILLEGALS GOODS trains will be banned from the Channel Tunnel unless the French authorities send written proof that each one has been searched and cleared of asylum-seekers. The new restrictions were announced yesterday as EWS, the British company that runs the trains, said that it was facing losses of £500,000 a week after having to cancel 1,700 trains in the past four months. Several companies have told EWS they are on the brink of switching the goods permanently to lorries unless the tunnel is fully reopened to goods trains. Only a handful of goods trains are getting through the tunnel each night because of a lack of security at the goods yard on the French side. Eurotunnel, the tunnel operator, imposed the new restrictions after severe delays on Wednesday when two refugees were seen on security cameras riding on the roof of a train bound for Britain. A day earlier, EWS found five refugees in a metal container on a train that had just arrived in Britain. SNCF, the French state rail operator, had given the container a security seal which is meant to show that it had been checked. SNCF must now send faxed confirmation that a train has been checked before it can enter the tunnel. EWS accused the French of failing to carry out proper security checks. The company said that it understood Eurotunnel’s draconian response, but the result would be “further long-term damage to the international rail freight sector”. It added: “Yet again, we call on the UK Government, the French Government and the European Commission to solve this crisis.” SNCF provides enough security to open the tunnel to goods trains for only a few hours each night. It recently completed a fence around the goods yard, but more than 200 yards of the new fencing has already been pulled down by asylum-seekers. Stephen Byers, the Transport Secretary, said: “It has taken too long. We will continue to make representations to the French to get them to discharge their responsibilities.” Refugees based at the Red Cross camp at Sangatte make repeated attempts each night to get on board trains bound for Britain. They target the marshalling yard at Frethun as well as the main Eurotunnel complex at Coquelles. But since security at the Channel Tunnel terminal has been increased
in France, many refugees — mainly Afghans and Kurds — have seen Frethun
as an easier option. They cut through fencing and use diversionary tactics
to get inside. Once there, they hide on the top of wagons and in
between carriages of cargo trains bound for Britain. Some have died trying
to ride the trains.

SEA CONTAINERS HOVERSPEED Sea Containers, operators of the world's largest fast ferry fleet, has finalised deployment of the craft for 2002. Hoverspeed's fast ferry English Channel service from Dover to Calais will be operated by three SeaCats ``Hoverspeed Great Britain,'' ``Danmark'' and ``France'' providing an ``on the hour every hour'' service from 0600 to 2100 for the fastest channel crossing in just 50 minutes berth to berth. The craft are undergoing a complete interior refurbishment with new seating supplied by Beurteaux of Australia and improved services to provide a unique experience. The level of service will be greatly enhanced with a table service to every passenger, along with an enhanced 1st offer, considered the best in the Channel. Speed, style and service will continue to differentiate Hoverspeed from other cross channel operators. The Newhaven-Dieppe service re-starts on March 22 operating SuperSeaCat and SeaCat ``Diamant'' resumes operating on the Dover-Ostend service on March 25. On the Irish Sea network a 100-metre monohull SuperSeaCat is operating the historic Liverpool-Dublin route. The service resumed on February 28. The craft can carry up to 620 passenger and 140 cars on the under four-hour crossing. It will also provide services from Liverpool to Douglas, Isle of Man. SeaCat ``Rapide'' will take up the Belfast-Heysham service on March 28 with extra car and passenger capacity at 145 and 630 respectively. This is a larger vessel than SeaCat ``Hoverspeed Great Britain,'' which previously operated the service. SeaCat ``Isle of Man'' will provide fast ferry crossings from Douglas to Belfast, Heysham, Liverpool and Dublin starting on March 27. SeaCat ``Scotland'' continues to serve the Belfast-Troon route, which celebrates its third anniversary in April. The craft has recently undergone a refurbishment programme, which includes a new look passenger interior, bar area and shopping facilities. In the Baltic Sea the popular duty free route between Helsinki, Finland and Tallinn, Estonia will continue to be served by a SuperSeaCat. The service will start on March 28. The joint venture fast ferry service with SNAV on the Ancona, Italy to Split, Croatia route will operate between June to October - its third season. A new high-speed craft, which will retain the ``Croazia Jet'' brand, will be introduced. It has capacity for 676 passengers, 156 cars and 8 coaches. In the United States, a fleet of five high-speed catamarans operated by SeaStreak America Inc., provides commuter services to several points in Manhattan, New York and New Jersey. The company has helped to revitalise the fast passenger ferry industry in the New York Metropolitan area. Last year SeaStreak carried 550,000 commuter passengers, a 30% increase on 2000. Senior Vice President of Sea Containers' Passenger Transport Division,
David
G. Benson, said: ``We continue to be at the forefront in the development
of fast ferry services and passengers can look forward to the continuation
of high levels of onboard service which have become synonymous with our
operations worldwide.'' Sea Containers operates a fast ferry fleet of 16
craft in 11 countries.

(The Lord is my Pilot; I shall not drift. He lighteth me across the dark waters:He steereth me in deep channels. He keepeth my log).

De rederij Townsend Thoresen Car Ferries was,

compulsory vehicle searches. Security guards use hand-held breath detectors,
which trace carbon dioxide, to search every car and van boarding P&O
Stena Line ferries for hidden bodies. Guards hand over any suspected illegal
immigrant they find to local authorities. P&O spokeswoman Gail Isted
said: "7,000 is the population of Kent town Westgate-On-Sea - it is amazing
to think we have caught that many." The company began the searches,
which cost it £750,000 a year, after the government introduced fines
of £2,000 for every undetected stowaway. Ferry companies can
also be charged detention and repatriation costs under the Carriers Liability
Act. In April P&O - Britain's largest ferry company - extended
the searches to Belgian port Zeebrugge, to combat a problem which
grew there as security improved at the French port of Calais. Estimates
indicate that between 400 and 800 people attempt to enter the UK illegally
each month. People of all nationalities attempt the crossing, many
undeterred by the dangers or the risk of being caught. Last month Home
Secretary David Blunkett announced the maximum jail sentence for human
trafficking would be increased from 10 to 14 years. But earlier this month
he decided not to impose the civil penalties of £2,000 per stowaway
on Eurotunnel, as well as on French train operator SNCF and British freight
company English Welsh and Scottish (EWS) trains. He explained this was
due to a "dramatic" fall in the number of asylum seekers using the trains
to try to enter the UK. And last week the Court of Appeal agreed
with an earlier High Court ruling that the fines were in breach of lorry
drivers' human rights. It is now likely that the government will
amend the law, even though the Home Office says that it retains the power
to legally enforce the controversial penalties.

of Free Enterprise herdacht.

P&O, PORT OF ZEEBRUGGE AND TOWN OF BRUGES WANT TO FORGET HERALD TRAGEDY Some 80 Zeebrugge townspeople, rescue workers and one family of a British Herald victim were present this Sunday morning at the memorial service in the local church and at the nearby Herald Rosegarden. Neither the ferry-company P&O, nor the Zeebrugge Port Authority or the City of Bruges had sent a representative to be present at the 15th anniversary service of the tragedy. Referring to the lack of representation, the local priest said in his sermon that city of Bruges officials were probably too busy with the festivities in connection with the city's becoming the present Cultural Capital of Europe, just a few days ago. Two Belgian former members of Townsend-Thoresen personnel were present at the memorial service, which was filmed by a VRT News team for the national news at 1 (12 uk time). Next Wednesday a memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock in the Seafarers' Centre at Snargate Street in Dover by the Reverend James MacDonald. Afterwards wreaths will be set adrift at the port. Leaving the port of Zeebrugge the Herald of Free Enterprise capsized
in just 90 seconds on Friday March 6th 1987. 193 people lost their
lives, the remains of 4 of them were never found. The vessel had
a compliment of 80 crew and 459 passengers. She carried 81 cars,
3 coaches and 47 lorries. Just two months prior to the tragedy P&O
had acquited ownership of the ill-fated Townsend Thoresen Car Ferries,
and its 22 ferries. As a result of the tragedy safety regulations
in connection with ferries have been vastly improved over the past 15 years.
