VERPLAATSEN WAKEFUL VERTRAAGD De in mei 1940 gezonken Britse torpedojager Wakeful blijft wellicht
nog een jaartje op de oude rustplaats voor onze kust liggen. Het
marineschip met aan boord de resten van naar schatting War wreck must be moved deeper A WORLD War II wreck which is the final resting place of 690 British
soldiers and sailors is to be moved to protect the lives of present day
mariners. Destroyer HMS Wakeful was torpedoed off the coast of Belgium
on May 29th, 1940, after picking up hundreds of men from Bray Dunes during
the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk. As
the exhausted and injured men slept below decks the ship was struck amidships
by a torpedo from a German E-boat and she broke in two, sinking in just
15 seconds. Only a handful of men survived. HMS Wakeful was
designated as a war grave and for the last 60 years she has rested in shallow
water at the eastern edge of the Channel, close to the approaches of Antwerp,
Zeebrugge and Ostend. The Channel is now one of the busiest stretches
of water in the world and the increasing size of merchant ships means that
the wreck, 57 feet below the surface, poses a real danger to modern mariners.
Delicate discussions between Britain and Belgium have been going on for
some time and a proposal to move the wreck into deeper water in the Summer
of 2002 has been agreed in principle. The Belgian-funded operation
will involve dredgers digging a deep trench for the warship and huge floating
cranes will lift the two halves of the V&W class destroyer into her
final resting place. A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence told
Navy News Online: "HMS Wakeful is still the property of the Crown and Belgium
is very aware that she is a military maritime grave, but she is a major
hazard to shipping and she does have to be moved. "Obviously there
are great sensitivities surrounding the wreck but the important point is
that the sanctity of the vessel will be maintained and the ship will be
treated with the greatest of respect." Before the operation gets
under way the MOD plans to consult the veterans organisations and will
try to contact families of those who are known to have been on board and
a service of rededication will be held when HMS Wakeful reaches her final
resting place. The whole operation has now been delayed by about
a year.

in Schotland. Ze kunnen namelijk met hun huisdieren PET HATE FOR NEW SCOTTISH FERRY (Alan Taylor in Sunday Herald) Pet hate for new Scottish ferry to Zeebrugge, Belgium's answer to Hull,
on the Superfast ferry's inaugural voyage from Rosyth. What with
this and the euro, travel this summer threatens to be a lot less painful
than usual. Where's the fun in that! Rejoicing over the ferry is near universal,
though there have been some dissenting noises, such as 'miaow', 'bow-wow'
and -- from the militant tendency -- 'grrrrrr!'. I am referring, of course,
to the ACGSU, the All Creatures Great and Small Union, which caterwauled
when it learned Superfast has no facilities for its members. With no vets
or suitable accommodation provided, pets must stay at home or travel the
length of the country in order to find sex, sun and sand. Superfast says
it has had many enquiries from distraught pets and their owners and is
reconsidering its position. It better had, and fast. Otherwise, a dirty
protest may be in the offing.

DOVER COASTGUARD RELEASE FIGURE FOR 2001 Dover Coastguard District Controller, Murray Milligan said: " The year 2001 has seen Dover Coastguard track in excess of 120,000 vessels safely through the Dover Strait and 1,756 persons have been rescued or assisted from danger. Unfortunately, although a drop on last year, 21 people have lost their lives. Also of concern has been the significant increase in the number of collisions in the Dover Strait. " Although the incident numbers remained identical to last year the downward trend continued with a drop from 2249 persons assisted in 2000 to 1756 in 2001. This is, I am sure, a direct result of the prevention campaigns carried out by the Coastguards on the coast co-ordinated by our Sector Manager." " The major concern last year was the increase in the number of collisions and this will be given considerable weight when considering prevention stratagem for the coming year." " On October 9th the MV Ash and MV Dutch Aquamarine collided 10nm Southeast of Hastings. Sadly the MV Ash sunk and the Master of the vessel lost his life." " On a more positive note the Eastbourne Coastguard Rescue Team received the Coastguard Rescue Shield for their "ongoing rescues and recoveries of casualties from the cliffs at Beachy Head". The shield was presented by the Chief Coastguard and was attended by the Mayor of Eastbourne. The shield is now on display in Eastbourne Town Hall for the rest of the year." " Once again the teamwork between the many organisations that go towards prevention and if necessary rescue has been of the highest standard. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all concerned for their efforts in 2001." " Our main goal this year will be to put across the ‘Prevention’ message.
Ensuring all that use the beaches, cliffs and coastal waters are educated
and prepared for the dangers that exist."

NIEUWE VEERLIJN ZEEBRUGGE-SCHOTLAND MAG GEEN SMOKKELROUTE WORDEN De nieuwe veerlijn tussen Zeebrugge en Schotland mag geen smokkelroute
worden. Om dat te "ZEEBRUGGE-ROSYTH NO EASY TARGET FOR SMUGGLERS" The Scottish Executive has announced a funding package to help police
Scotland's first direct ferry link to Europe. The £220,000 is intended
to help ensure the route between Rosyth and the Belgian port of Zeebrugge
does not become an easy target for smugglers. More than 45,000 bookings
have already been taken for the service, which will be operated by Greek-based
Superfast Ferries. Police, customs and immigration officials are
taking part in a training exercise in Fife designed to ensure that Scotland's
doors are open only to holidaymakers. They |
