AFRICA TIMELINE

1000 CE:

Vast network of linear earthworks at Benin, Nigeria, suggest widespread settlement. Stone buildings erected in Kumbi Sahel, the capital of ancient Ghana (West Africa). Ghanaian Empire of Soninke peoples at height of power; equipped its armies with iron weapons and became master of the trade in salt and gold. By the early 11th century, Muslim advisers were at the court of Ghana. Bronze-casting centre at Igbo Ukwu (Nigeria) Copper and iron-working in south-eastern Zimbabwe. Asante trade gold, kola and other goods with Muslims to the north. Islam moves into sub-Saharan Africa

Rise of the Mali Empire of the Mande (or Mandinka) peoples in West Africa. The Mali Empire was strategically located near gold mines and the agriculturally rich interior floodplain of the Niger River. Oranmiyan, prince from Yoruba kingdom of Ife, founds present Benin dynasty.
