Hans Hamers African Ceramics & restoration
Hans Hamers (1949) has the biggest African Ceramics Archive in the World.
He started as an art teacher, later becoming a consultant on visual arts and literature and at last consultant on art education.
With his wife Ineke van Middelkoop, both became interested in the art and culture of Africa, soon African ceramics became a spearhead.
Beside collecting objects, the foundation of a large archive was laid on African ceramics. Anything they could find on the subject was filed, first on paper, but later also in a digital way.
Since 1998 they regularly make trips to different countries in West Africa and meeting potters is always an important part of it. They try to collect as much information as possible concerning their technique and design.
His daughter Rinske Hamers works as a conservator/restorer of glass and ceramics at the ICN (Institution Collection Netherlands) in Amsterdam. The academy is specialized in restoring and the conservation of earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, glass, crystal and enamel.
