AIRPORT ART PYLONS

by Sankofa Sings found at austin airport

African art and artifacts from the 19th century are on display. Part of the City’s permanent collection, these items are a sampling from the opening exhibition at the City of Austin’s new George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center. Titled Sankofa Sings, these authentic items include a hand carved Bolo mask, cast bronze Bamileke Gongs, and intricate wood carvings. Pictured at right is Seated Male Figure with Beard.

 

On display through June 27, 2006.

A celebration of freedom, the Carver's core exhibit is dedicated to the history and evolution of Juneteenth. We are proud to be the first museum in the nation to feature a permanent exhibit honoring this Texas-born day of jubilee. Through a combination of visual and interactive activities, every day is Juneteenth at the Carver Museum!

African American Folktales African-American Folktales
In this storytelling program, guest performers travel to schools and community groups to bring ethnic history and fables to life. The museum-sponsored artists recount tales of fantasy, mystery, heroes, and everyday life from many regions of Africa and the Americas. NOTE: This program is offered to larger groups and school assemblies.
