Blair  said the Africa 2005 project, a series of events to be put on at the Museum, will coincide with Britain’s presidency of the G8 group of nations, focusing on the plight of Africa.

The extra money, from the Department of Culture and spread over five years, will pay for projects, exhibitions and an exchange of scholars.

Cash will be matched at local level in Africa by the British Council.

Mr Blair said the British Museum was a “fantastic, national resource” with five million annual visitors.
