Hats Off to Budd!
the Indiana University Art Museum Special Exhibitions Gallery, September 30–December 17, 2006
Budd Stalnaker—textile artist, longtime faculty member in the Hope School of Fine Arts, and friend of the IU Art Museum—died last May. His gifts of African art, most recently in the form of his collection of more than seventy African hats, are an enduring legacy to the Art Museum.

For many it’s not simply about an aesthetic, it’s about age-old traditions and craftsmanship, and sensing the rhythm and spirit of Africa through handiwork and indigenous materials.

Collection-connections Most of us would agree that the urge to create art and to recognize beauty in the creations of artists and artisans is universal to the human condition. For many of us, collecting and living with beautiful objects is a passion and necessity.

Kwanzaa Christmas and Hanukkah have been around for nearly 2,000 years, and both holidays are steeped in tradition and lore.
Kwanzaa, which begins december 26, hasn't even seen its 40th anniversary, but its roots can be traced back to the time of the Pharaohs.

Hunting for Art ...So successful did Cipriano become at rooting these objects out of the strangest places that her collection grew to include thousands and thousands of beads and scores - perhaps hundreds - of African objects. Her collection fills the stairway, hall and several upstairs rooms of her Marlbank home - with so much left over that she was able to become one of the most prominent lenders to the Peninsula Fine Arts Center's new West African art exhibit....
