''Afrikaanse werpmessen in de spotlights'' is an exhibition
running till 15 July 2007
in the
It is the first time the Museum is showing some 121 throwing knifes from the
Central Africa area.
These weapons are special due to the collecting history due to the relation
with the business contacts they had with the Lower-Kongo area.
Nearly all knifes showed in this exhibition are from before 1900 and offered
or bought to the Museum by collectors working usually for the New African
Trade Association ( de Nieuwe
Afrikaansche Handelsvereniging).
The attractive shapes and fine details shows the skills from the Central
African blacksmiths in the second half of the XIXth century.
This small exhibition is part of ‘Collections in the spotlights’.
This well illustrated exhibition catalog contains also the Dr. Peter
Westerdijk text "The African Throwing Knife An Introduction"
with following points:
- Towards a definition
- General appearance of the African throwing knife
- The production of throwing knives
- Throwing knives in action
- Range and effects
- Alternative uses of throwing knives
A must see and certainly a must read exhibition and catalog.
