Expanding Africa:
New Art, New Directions

This exhibition highlights an exciting new
direction for The Newark Museum’s African collection. It features work
produced between the late 1960s and 2006 by eight artists of diverse geographic
and cultural backgrounds. All are recent acquisitions. Viewed together, they
expand our understanding of Africa and its artists, providing a window into the
ongoing artistic creativity of this dynamic continent.
While all these artists respond to their African homeland and its rich cultural
legacy in their work, they do so in ways that challenge the stereotypical view
of African art as limited to masks, figural sculptures and textiles. Some of the
artists included in the exhibition work with wood or clay, materials associated
with traditional African genres, in new and unexpected ways. Others have adopted
Western art forms, such as prints, photography and painting, or embraced
non-conventional materials, including discarded metal bottle caps. In
commentaries included throughout the exhibition, the artists themselves speak to
their wide-ranging approaches to art-making as well as their equally varied
subject matter and sources of inspiration.
