The High Museum of Art is the leading art institution serving the Southeastern United States. The Museum’s role is to provide the people of Atlanta and the region with a diverse, broad selection of art. The High’s distinctive location and regional history also offer a unique perspective that influences the art on exhibit and how the Museum builds its collections. With over 11,000 works of art in its permanent collection, the High Museum of Art has an extensive anthology of 19th- and 20th-century American art; significant holdings of European paintings and decorative art; growing collections of African American art and Photography; and burgeoning collections of modern and contemporary art and African art. The High’s newly expanded facilities more than double its current gallery space to showcase more works of art and accommodate an increased number of special exhibitions. The reinstallation of the collection brings together all of the High’s holdings under one roof, creating a rich environment for visitors to explore the full range of artistic expression. Begun in 1953, the growing African art collection has expanded to encompass 589 works of art, including over 240 pieces from The Richman Family Foundation. Highlights include:
