The African art collection of the Neuberger Museum of Art provides an outstanding introduction to the richness and complexity of the visual artistic traditions of Africa. Spanning a broad geographic range from Mali to Mozambique, the works presented here represent the creativity of African artists from over thirty different cultures. Object types include masks, figural sculpture, textiles, and utilitarian objects, created from diverse materials such as wood, ivory, horn, fabric, clay and metal.

The installation is arranged geographically, beginning with western African artistic traditions and continuing through to the arts of eastern and southern Africa. Within these regional sections, groupings of objects address a variety of themes, including: Masks and Masquerades, Artists and Patrons, Ritual and Performance, Power and Prestige, Rites of Passage, and Art and Daily Life.
