Dear reader ,
Harvard University is pleased to announce that it will host the Arts Council of the African Studies Association's Thirteenth
Triennial Symposium on African Art from 31 March 2004 through 3 April 2004. Cambridge (and the Boston area more generally) will be a vital setting for related discussions.
The overarching theme is "African Art: Roots and Routes" examination of flows, exchanges, and "third spaces" that transcend such dualisms in relation to Africa-linked arts, artists, and cultural forms.
They are looking for sponsors to bring African Scholars and Caribbean Scholars to the Triennial symposium. If you require more details about the
Triennal, please contact Robin Poynor, President of ACASA at mailto:rpoynor*arts.ufl.edu
Afrika
Museum, Berg en Dal is known for its fine in-door African collection
and open air Museum for African Architecture. Familiar Aliens is a text related on the Afrika Museum, Berg en
Dal. Interesting reading on the background motivations and past story.
" The story begins with two large drawing rooms in a spacious timber mansion called Huize Ooster-Meerwijk in the village of Berg en Dal . In 1949, the mansion, which stands amid woodland, was bought by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (the Spiritan Fathers) as a home for missionaries returning from Africa. Father Superior Piet
Bukkems, who was so greatly adored by 'his' people in what is now Tanzania that they proclaimed him chief, decorated the two drawing rooms with African objects that other members of the order had brought back for various mission exhibitions "...(click on red link to read the whole story)
I
will participate at the Biennial Fair of Antiques of Lisbon.
The fair will take place from 27 March to 4 April 2004.
For centuries, Portugal had a presence in Africa and in the East.
Unfortunately, most of the Portuguese Antique dealers are committed to other areas than primitive art.
However, due to the Portuguese historical past they regard with great attention other arts as equally important.
They feel that a certain innovation of the market could be advantageous for both parts.
Lisbon is a beautiful and agreeable city, full of history and has a temperate climate, good gastronomy and people are warm and welcoming.
If you are a professional Antiques dealer and wish to participate, please contact Ivânia with my compliments, and ask for conditions:
