Repatriation?
The Museum of Ethnography has repatriated some of its objects to the countries of their origin, but the Museum also claims the right as well as the responsibility to safeguard and to show its collections. True, the objects have their roots in local communities all over the world, yet they do not only tell us about life in for instance Samarkand, Timbuktu or Tahiti, but also how people interrelate on a global level. We surely have the right to safeguard, interpret and exhibit the cultural treasures of other nations. The message of an ethnographic museum is not that people of the world stick to their 'culture', but rather that identity is continuously recreated. We all live in that kind of rootlessness.
