Skinner, Inc., one of the nation's leading auction houses for antiques and fine art, will host an auction of American Indian and Ethnographic Art on Sunday, September 23, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. in its Boston gallery. Featured are Pre-Columbian, African, Polynesian, Plains, Great Lakes and Northwest Coast art and artifacts. More than 60 lots of African art grace the sale, most of which comes from a single owner. The collection represents the best grouping of African material ever to be offered by Skinner. Of particular note is a Bembe African Carved Wood Female Figure (lot 74; est. $10/15,000); a rare Urhobo African Carved Wood Male Figure (lot 85, est. $20/30,000); and several fine axes (lot 95, est. $8/1,200; lot 96, est. $6/800, lot 97, est. $1/1,500). A nice assortment of Polynesian art will also be available. Highlights include two Polynesian Carved Wood Male Figures (lot 120, est. $4/6,000 and lot 121, est. $2/3,000) and a Melanesian Polychrome Carved Wood Female Figure (lot 127, est., $4/6,000).
