Saul and Marcha Stanoff collection

High results at the Sotheby's May 17 '07 auction from this collection. A few highlights below.

The two-day sales at Sotheby’s New York of the Saul & Marsha Stanoff Collection; African, Oceanic & Pre-Columbian Art from various owners; and American Indian Art totaled $25,444,880 (est.$9,498,900/13,635,000). 

The morning’s American Indian Art sale, which also included property from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, surpassed its high estimate to bring $2,770,860 (est. $1,698,900/2,435,000). The highlight from this sale was An Early and Rare Cree Costume (lot 123), which sold for $510,000, against an estimate of $250/350,000.

The Saul & Marsha Stanoff Collection (est. $4/5.7 million) achieved a total of $11,904,300, more than double its high estimate and a record for a single-owner sale of African, Oceanic and Art of the Americas at Sotheby’s. 

The various-owners sale of African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian Art, including property from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, totaled $10,769,720 (est. $3.8/5.7 million), a record for a sale of Tribal Art at Sotheby’s. This sale featured a historically rich offering including traditional and ceremonial works of art ranging from Nigerian and Central African to Mexican and Peruvian.
