North American P-51 "Mustang"

  • Unknown unit

  • Pilot KIA

  • Crashed at Overslag, Palingstraat, after September 1944

  • Large parts of engine, prop hub and blad recovered December 22, 1997

This case remains a mystery to us. However, during the recovery we were able to find out we were dealing with a P-51 Mustang. Villagers told us the plane crashed after the Liberation (September '44). We found fragments of parachute, an indication the pilot was killed. Another item was the signal mirror, RAF issue. Most probably this was a Mustang used by the RAF. Our guess is that this was in fact Mustang III FZ182, flown by W/O W.J. Luffman, who went missing in the Lokeren area (which is nearby) on February 7, 1945. W/O Luffman is buried at Schoonselof Cemetery, Antwerp.
