Oldsmobile Starfire

1979

The Starfire is the second car that came into our possession.

one day I needed some parts for the Buick, so off to the junkyard !

Now the only mistake I made at that time was to take my

wife along !

As soon as we entered the place my girl took off like a rocket!

there she was (I say she because I do believe this car is female)

My girl was all over this car with the customary OOH and Aah !

And then the words "I WANT THIS CAR ! "  (I will learn later what

these  words really stand for)

my "rocket" shoots of to the owner to ask what he wants for this

car even before I have the chance to check this car out, does it run?

what engine does it have? any problems with it?

Everybody knows if you find a car in a junkyard there has to be

something  wrong with it!

so while my rocket is talking to the owner, a friend and I start to

check her out.

It says Oldsmobile on the front, Starfire on the fenders, year?

ah 1979 says the papers.

Engine: 4 cylinder 2.5L, manual transmission, power steering.

She looks ok beside the doors that have been repaired, the front

fenders have been partly rebuild with fiberglass and some rust

here and there.

Interior looks like new tough.

Lets see if the engine runs, yep it runs! but like crap! it runs only

on three cylinders!  this friend who is also a mechanic  dives into

the engine bay, fumbles around a bit and comes out of the engine

bay with a big grin on his face and the phrase "sparkplug wire

was loose".

this engine is spinning now.

So lets see: engine: ok, body: well nothing wrong that I cant

fix, some small stuff has to be found and replaced, like one

door handle, washer fluid container, things like that.

price: well, rocket returns with one of her smile-puppy face eyes.

Oooooh I know that look!

"honey! its dirt cheap! and we can have the parts that are missing

form that wreck that stands over there!"

Now do I really have to say how long it took to get this car home?

One quick dash home, take the plates off of the Buick,

jump into our friends car again, drive back like the devil is

on our tail (the junkyard is closing soon!)

stop on the way at a bank (GOOD things those cash dispenser

thingies!)

There! we made it! (yeah right! like my girl, who stayed behind

would have allowed the junkyard to close!)

So the same evening the "little one" like we started to call here is

home.

Now if you go to the next page you will see what has been done

to the little one from day one to its current condition.

The present: my wife left me and took this car with her

she was smart enough to let me register, have it inspected

and insured on my expense before leaving tough!
