These days I play guitar with ”The Avengers”, a band made up of mostly ex “Flying Saucers”, Terry Earl, Pete Pritchard and Alby Green, and featuring the great singing of Cliff Edmunds. I also have my own  Duo/ Trio/ quartet,

The Avengers and Frankie Ford

L-R:  Terry Chimes, Curtis (Frankie's backing singer), Liam Grundy, Pete Pritchard, Frankie Ford, Alby Green and Cliff Edmunds.

Front:  Dave and Terry Earl

“ Dave’s not Here” mixing rock, roll, rhythm and blues as well as other occasional outfits such as “Mercury Blues”, “The Foot-Tappers” , “Tony Barker’s Blues Band”. Now there’s a relatively new venture “The Razers” which is a great Blues band featuring Steve Matthews on harmonica and vocals, Toby Baron, Jon Bankes and/or Richie Sadler.

Dave's not Here: Dave Heley, Tim Broughton and Dave

I have been very fortunate over the years to have backed-up many of the original American pioneers of rock n roll , rockabilly and even a couple of the real-deal Bluesmen. They don’t come any more important than Scotty Moore.

I’ve also had the honour of backing Sleepy LaBeef, Marvin Rainwater, Johnny Powers, Ray Campi, Narvel Felts,……………(maybe others?) When I was with “Red Beans and Rice” we backed-up Lowell Fulson, which was a big buzz, Elvis recorded his “Reconsider Baby” and Lowell employed a young Ray Charles in his band many years ago. More recently, Hemsby Houseband leader Wayne Hopkins called me up to back-up Eddie “The Chief” Clearwater at the Hemsby weekender, and that was a real thrill. With “The Avengers” we gigged with Frankie (“Sea Cruise”) Ford, a great pianist and singer with a great stage presence , and also Jerry Lee’s sister, Linda Gail Lewis.

On a blues gig in London with Tony Barkers band a few years ago, I noticed a familiar face at the bar. During our break I invited him to join us onstage for a number, 10 minutes later we were jamming Wilson Pickett’s “ In the Midnight Hour” with Mr. Tom Jones!,Wow what a buzz, we made the national newspapers the next day.

In Norway this year on a gig with Scotty, I met original “Fleetwood Mac” slide guitarist and singer, Jeremy Spencer. I saw the band play 4 or 5 times in the 60’s, I was a fan. We got on well, amazing us with his knowledge of roots American music, including all the Sun label rockabilly. A couple of weeks later I found myself strumming an accoustic guitar, backing him up on a recording for a DVD to be released soon. He is a great player and singer, and I;m sure this DVD will surprise many people after his many years in the wilderness.
