As I lived for a long time near the battlesites of the Bulge, I could not resist to re-create some historical events. The design of the 3D-maps is based on topographical maps, personal pictures and visits of the area, Tactical information comes from books and internet articles.

Peiper was ordered to penetrate down the Ambleve River valley through Trois-Ponts and on to Werbomont. He fully intended to cross the Meuse River at Huy. He was given strict orders to keep moving regardless of events on his flanks. He was also to create complete chaos in the Allied rear areas if at all possible.
At any rate, turning the Southern flank of the 99th, he pushed West. Alone now, it became apparent that a shortage of fuel would be disastrous. He moved North to an american fuel dump at Bullingen. Here he helped himself to 50,000 gallons and moved on down to the Ligneuville Highway. He then sent Major Diefenthal (Panzer Grenadiers) along that road to Baugnez while he approached Ligneuville from the South.
It was at Baugnez that 84 American soldiers from the 285th Field Artillery Observation Bn. and other small units, alledgedly were massacred in the open field at the Baugnez's crossroads. Allthough the role of Peiper in the killings is still at this day subject to controversy, one cannot deny that other atrocities were committed by elements of the Sicherheits-Dienst following in the trail of Peiper's fighting troops. Prisoners and civilians were shot later at Ligneuville and Stavelot.
At 1700 hours on December 17, Peiper left Ligneuville for the important bridge at Stavelot. The road was a poor one and Peiper said later it was a "road for bicycles". But on December 18 he took Stavelot.
It was at this point that General Hodges, commanding the American First Army, was able to deploy the 30th Infantry Division into the fracas at the "North Shoulder" of the "Bulge" as it was to be called.
If Peiper were to take Werbomont, to get to the Meuse River, he would need to cross the Salm River where it joined with the Ambleve at Trois-Ponts.
However, the 51st and 291st Engineer Battalions stopped him at Trois-Ponts by destroying the bridges over the Salm and the Ambleve. Peiper swerved North to La Gleize.
Bastogne was bombed by the German troops from the 18th December onwards and encircled since the 20th of December. The town was defended by the 101st Airborn Division under the command of General A.C. McAuliffe. During a total of six days Bastogne underwent a terrible siege. In the neighbouring villages of Neffe, Marvie and Champs terrible battles take place during which numerous soldiers from both armies fell in the cold snowed-under hills of the Ardennes.
At 11.30 am on December the 22nd, the Germans ask Bastogne to surrender. The answer of General McAuliffe is short : NUTS !
On December the 23th the Germans take the Kessler farmhouse on the way to Arlon, just 2 Km outside of Bastogne. The city was heavily bombed on Christmas eve, the 24th of December. During the following days the 5th Panzerdivision under General H.E.von Manteuffel unsuccessfully tries to take the city. In the meantime help was on the way. General Patton sent more troops to set Bastogne free and on the 27th of December the 101st Airborn Division in Bastogne receives its first reinforcements.
However, on the 29th the Germans launch a new attack on the city. Thousand of soldiers hold man-to-man fights in the woods around the city. Finally, the Germans, weakened, have to abandon their plan to take Belgium via the Ardennes. On January the 14th 1945 they retreat from Foy, a village 5 Km outside of Bastogne, leaving behind thousands of dead and a completely destroyed city.

| March 15, 02 : | A link to Magua's Rural Buildings Mod was restored, remember this is not the Normandy Mod, but in my opinion this mod is as close as you can get to the characteristics of a typical village in Eastern France or even the Ardennes. |
| March 12, 02 : | Fixed broken links to images in descriptions, please report any anomalities you might encounter. |
| March 11, 02 : | Changed layout of page and added frames, working on page about scenario design. |
| March 6, 02 : | In order to update this webpage, add
new scenarios, descriptions and graphics, I had to clean
up some sections. Magua's Rural building's mod will be
temporarily unavailable. I have added 5 new battlescenarios and 1 operation. I regrouped all the scenarios into one section, instead of attaching them to the ToO's. I have also updated the older scenarios and adapted them to the 1.12 patch. I thank all you for sending me comments. I included some suggestions in the new versions, added VL's, changed exit zones or just increased fanaticism... Of course, I also edited the winterscenarios in order to make them compatible with Tom's BoB mod. All scenarios are playable against the AI. In the "description" pages, you can have already a look at the preferences. Units are placed in such way that you can choose the default set-up option (except for the Switchback operation). I hope you enjoy and looking forward to your comments. Thanks for visiting this webpage. |
