The Avenger (promo-cd, V 2001)
Vampire Magazine (September 2001):

I will start this review with mentioning that this is only a promotional release. Therefore it is NOT for sale. Still this is a useful release, because Gurthang deserves an introduction to a larger crowd. Furthermore, they will soon release an album, "The irony of death". They only recorded this promo to test their recording equipment. I must say the sound is rather good. Clear and transparent, with enough room for every instrument. Only the snare drum slightly drowns in the music. Gurthang describe themselves as a black/death metal band. In my opinion, it's mainly black metal, with only the slightest hint of death metal. The music is keyboard-oriented. The music could be placed between Emperor, Enslaved and maybe their fellow Belgians Avatar. Quite folky, with both dreamy passages and raging parts. The ever present synths create a very mystic atmosphere. The songs are good, but don't really leave a remaining impression yet. The songs are quite long, then again this contributes to the variation. The overall impression remains positive, and makes me look forward to the upcoming album.

Musketeer of death:

Gurthang (formerly known as Ecliptica) plays eclectic barbarian metal by own saying. Well I must say it really fits well. Fast black metal is combined with melodic fantasy metal. It isn’t that strange, knowing Gurthang is a part of JRR Tolkien’s fantasy-world. The music gives me a wonderful feeling and takes me to another world. Romance and total destruction is created next to each by the passionate playing of the musicians. Worth mentioning is the great sound of this self-recording by special hard- and software. There are a lot of "professional" albums that have a worse sound than this release. The three songs on this promo are part of a complete concept album entitled ‘’The Irony of Death (Chronicles of a magical vengeance and an inevitable death)'' which will be released in 2002. And all you fantasy black metal freaks should really look forward to this one, because it will be an acquisition to your CD-collection.

Still Online:

Gurthang is the new name for the band Ecliptica. The band changed the name but not the music. They bring us well recorded and produced blackmetal. It is technical and melodic played with some deathmetal touches. The bandnames is taken from Tolkien and the music sounds as you can step into a kind of a dreamworld created by the keyboards. The songs have also a bombastic touch. The band recorded the songs by themselves and the sound is very good and professional. This cdr is just a try out for the upcoming full cd. And in that way it is promising something very good.

Mindview (nr 84, december 2001):

Pull the Chain (no. 29, summer 2002):

For the most J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy-worlds fanatics, GURTHANG is the name of the black sword Anglachel reforging in Nargothrond (thanks to the band bio…even if I read the lord of rings trilogy some ten years ago, I completely forgot this part of the legend). For the most Belgian black metal fanatics, GURTHANG means ECLIPTICA. Four of the six musicians (exit Elyte Empiricae & Lesley-Ann) in charge of the "Eclectica" 1999 demo, are now active in GURTHANG. With this three tracks demo' (that actually is a very good home production), GURTHANG try to attract label interest and attention in general. I'm sincerely convinced our landmates will find a label as their promo scores high in terms of musicianship and songwriting. Even if you can label the whole concept as being in league with nowadays atmospheric black metal, "The Avenger" is highlighted by a continuous flow of timings and rhythm changes. To accommodate the allround doomy horrific atmospheres, pace alternates fast sections with slower ones. Relying on the different musical interpretation, vocals are either screamed in a black metalish type or more grunted (and almost depressive). Continuously alternating its appearance, singer Arneriach contributes to make the whole thing furious, aggressive and intense. No price as this promo is not for sale. (Georges Laforet)

Deathmetal.be (2003):

In JRR Tolkien’s tale of epic fantasy Anglachel is the sword forged by Eöl the Dark Elf and borne by Beleg of Doriath. It was later reforged as Túrin's black sword and re-named to Gurthang. This is the band’s fifth release to date and second under their new moniker. Three lengthy atmospheric black metal tracks is what they present on this well-recorded offering. Haunting synths, variated drums, well-structured riffs and vocal diversity are keywords throughout these three tracks. ‘A Tragedy?’ is a good example of the aforementioned facets. ‘The Avenger’ has a blasting intro and constantly changes pace. Categorically, influences of Dimmu Borgir, early Cradle Of Filth and Opera IX spring to mind. With a crystal clear recording sound and great musicianship we can look forward to the band’s forthcoming release “The Irony Of Death”. (Wouter Roemers)

The Thrill of Live Magick (live-tape, 2002)
Mindview:

(GDV)

Nocturnal Hore zine:

In the year of 2001, did Wommelgem Metal Wrath II find place in the dark Belgium. The Belgian band Gurthang, thought that event, should be laid on tape, especially their show at the arrangement. It has now been released by the English label Christcrusher. That means 6 live tracks and a new studio track for us. The band is delivering metal consisting of some death metal with melodic tendencies and atmospheric, almost gothic sequences. I don’t know if it is the concert or the style, but the music seems very tame and uninspiring. Gurthang delivers a very tight, and to judge very professional set. Though, I think the music is lacking of highlights and interesting moments. The vocal is pretty good, but is lacking aggressiveness, the same thing can be said about the guitar work. The “secret” track which can be found after the live part, is the superior deal of this release. There are some more power behind the music. It is like the cooperation between the guitar and the keyboard, doesn’t work live. And the band is pretty dependent on the play, between those 2 instruments. Judging from the “secret” track, does the music work and are pretty good, when guitar and keyboard are playing together, it creates the right amount of energy. The live part is okay, not more, but the studio track should be reason enough for you to get this album! (5/10)

~ Interviews ~
Vampire Magazine (9/2001)
Gurthang, the mighty black sword of Turin, son of Hurin. Every Tolkien-addict immediately knows what I'm talking about. But does every metalhead knows what I'm talking about when I say: Gurthang, the atmospheric black/death metal band from Belgium? Probably not, and that's too bad. That's why I got in contact with them for an interview. A chance for this band to promote themselves on the world wide web.(Done by Stijn)

First, the ultimate opening question: please give us an introduction of Gurthang.
Gurthang is a Belgian (Antwerp) technical yet melodic black death metal-band, consisting of five full-time members and a session-keyboardplayer. We used to be known as 'Ecliptica', but due to numerous reasons we decided to change our bandname into Gurthang on the vernal equinox (March 21st) of the unholy year 2001. Most bandmembers played in Ecliptica for at least two years and recorded the cdemo 'Eclectica' back in 1999.

Why did you decide to record everything yourself, and not in an existing studio?
Our drummer Myvatn has this other band/project 'Cold Image'. These guys used the same equipment as we did to record some stuff and since it sounded pretty good we decided to use it as well. The most important thing here is that we used an electronic drumkit, which is a lot easier to record than an acoustic one. And a studio recording is also quite expensive, while this way of recording is not expensive and more relax since we take all time we want.

The promo "The Avenger" is not for sale. I know there are some mistakes in the mix, but I still think it's good enough to sell. Don't you consider to still put it out for sale?
Thanks for the compliments, but no, we won't put the promo for sale. The mistakes in the mix are indeed not that huge, but the problem is that we wrote a complete full-length concept-album and the three tracks of the promo are scattered parts of this concept. So we prefer to keep it all together and thus not to sell the same tracks twice!

Tell me something more about your upcoming album.
Like mentioned in the previous question, we wrote a concept album entitled 'The Irony of Death. Chronicles of a Magical Vengeance and an Inevitable Death'. We wrote eight tracks, two intermezzi, a prologue and epilogue. Music for about an hour or so. Since we all like different kinds of metal, the attentive listener will notice a lot of influences throughout the entire work (black, death, doom, thrash and even heavy metal!). However the black and death metal influences are the most important ones, we like to mix them all into our 'eclectic barbaric metal'. Within a few months we will have recorded and mixed the entire album, hopefully it will be available early 2002. So be prepared!!

At the time of the recording, you didn't have a bassplayer. Do you have one now?
Yes, we found a bassplayer who completed the sound we were looking for. He will do some (deep) vocals as well. The guy is called Waut and he plays also in the innovative death metal-band 'Condamnation'. By accident he is also my brother…

Your name comes from the works of Tolkien. Are your lyrics influenced by his work as well?
Our name comes indeed from the depths of Tolkien's magnificent Middle-Earth. Gurthang is a black sword, and translated from the Elven-languague it means 'Iron of Death'. My lyrics have no direct link to the works of Tolkien, but this can change in the future, since the lyrics of our album were written before we changed our name. The fantasy genre in general is an important source of inspiration for me, that's for sure.

What are the other concepts in your lyrics?
The human emotions and especially that dark/evil-side of man I find attractive to study. Hate, anger, vengeance, sadness, grief, … all inspire me a lot. One can find most of these sentiments in the lyrics of 'The Irony of Death' and also my other lyrics (for those who know the work of Ecliptica). The fantasy aspect is in fact only the cover, something nice for those who like bedtime stories, hehe. Beneath that I crawl into the skin of the tortured human soul. So these feelings I describe are not per definition mine, let that be clear.

Have you done a lot of promotion yet? Interviews and stuff like that?
No, but we're working on it. This is in fact the first interview of Gurthang ever! It always strikes me how many 'zines there are, which makes selection a hard task. The underground lives, but the bigger 'zines don't give a fuck about smaller bands. For example, in 1999 we were finalists of 'Mindview's First Blood Awards' and when I mailed them about our change of name, they even didn't mention it on their news-page… sad but true.

Do you play live a lot?
With Ecliptica we did a lot of shows (with Ancient, Enthroned, Cirith Gorgor, Axamenta, and many many others), but now people seem to have forgotten us a bit. Anyway, our bassplayer knows most of our songs so we are ready again to torture the audience live with our barbaric assaults. The experience is there, that's for sure!

Last words.
Well Stijn, thanks for this interview! I truly appreciate the work of Vampire Magazine, so keep up the good work. If anyone might be interested in Gurthang (live-performances, interviews, etc.) feel free to contact us. Stay metal! Maniacal Hailz, Arne on behalf of Gurthang.

Brutalism (9/2001)
Gurthang is a Belgian (Antwerp) technical yet melodic black death metal-band, formerly known as 'Ecliptica'. Due to numerous reasons we decided to change our bandname into Gurthang on the vernal equinox (March 21st) of the unholy year 2001. Most bandmembers played in Ecliptica for at least two years and recorded the cdemo 'Eclectica' back in 1999.
At this very moment the band is preparing its first release. Gurthang's debut will be a full-cd entitled 'The Irony of Death (Chronicles of a Magical Vengeance and an Inevitable Death)', a real fantasy concept-story. The name 'Gurthang' comes from JRR Tolkien's fantasy-world. It is a black sword, exactly meaning 'Iron of Death'.

Please give us a short introduction of yourself?
Well, I am Arne, aka Arneriach, leadsinger of the Belgian black death metal-band Gurthang. I’m 24 years young/old and in my last year of studying History at university. I listen to black metal since 1995. What more do you want to know?

How does it feel to be part of Gurthang?
Very nice, thank you, hehe. I have quite some influence on the writing process of our songs and I am totally responsible for the lyrical aspect of the band, so that gives me both satisfaction enough to continue. Playing live is another pleasant aspect of being a member of a band. (Not to mention the numerous rock star advantages, hehe)

The debut is a concept story. Lyrically inspired by Tolkien?
Our debut will indeed be a concept story, entitled ‘The Irony of Death. Chronicles of a Magical Vengeance and an Inevitable Death.’ It is not inspired by Tolkien, or by any other novelist. However the fantasy genre as itself is almost invented by the man, so in that way I am inspired of course.

Why is Tolkien an inspiration for so many bands?
JRR Tolkien offered us a complete new world, Middle Earth, where we are able to roam freely. No borders or limits, except those of our imagination. So I think lots of his influence is due to ‘escapism’. However in our case it is not. We simply needed a proper new name for the band (Gurthang was called Ecliptica until the beginning of 2001), and I came up with it, by accident so to say. Maybe his enormous linguistic approach has also something to do with it: his Elven-languages are so metal-like, not? (Gorgoroth, Isengard, Shagrath to name but a few sound very metalish to me…)

Did you read his books? Your opinion on them?
I read all his books, some however not completely (The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales). Like most of his admirers, I simply like his way of describing the unknown places, cultures and actors he invented, created. It is all so convincingly written, almost perfect. Also his story-lines are well composed, with almost all necessary ingredients available, or something like that, eh.

At what age did you learn to read?
The same age I learned to calculate: the number of the beast divided by 111.

Why and when did you decide to use the mic?
At the beginning of the year 1998, Ecliptica needed a new vocalist and I wanted to try something new so… you see what happened. I still use the same microphone, hehe.

Can you play with other instruments/body parts?
Headbanging is almost all I can beside screaming the lungs out of my body; luckily I am good at it

Where do you get musical inspiration?
Like anyone else: by listening to good - and even bad (to know what to avoid)- music.

To what bands do you listen to yourself?
99% of the time I listen to metal: mostly (Norwegian) black, but also a lot Gothenburg-styled bands. When I am in the mood for it, some doom/gothic metal can tease my ears as well. Heavy or thrash or the modern metal-styles can’t interest me much (exceptions exist of course).
Besides metal, well, anything with a dark or aggressive or melancholic mood maybe can be nice…

Your top 5 bands/albums?
Always a though question… so I give albums of bands I like all times:
• Dissection ‘Storm of the Light’s Bane’
• Old Man’s Child ‘Ill-Natured Spiritual Invasion’
• Dimmu Borgir ‘Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia’
• Dark Tranquillity ‘The Gallery’
• In The Woods… ‘Heart of the Ages’
This list could be twice as long without any problem, but… what the Hell!

Your favourite number to play air guitar?
I’ d say ‘Soulreaper’ by Dissection. Metallica and Sepultura are also great to play air guitar.

Why is Heineken better than Stella Artois?
It isn’t. Besides, I exclusively drink Palm, hehe. Remember: ‘Van Palm word je kalm.’

Had some gigs with famous bands? Experience with them?
One time we played with Ancient. Our keyboard-player at that time was a woman, and she got a lot attention of their bass-player…
Anyway, most musicians of the so-called ‘famous’ bands are also just metalfreaks playing for fun and booze, so normally they act like anyone else you know.

How do you arrange gigs? Yourself? Agency? Easy or not?
I have arranged quite some gigs, however most of the time we were asked. Sometimes by a complete stranger, sometimes by someone we know or met in the scene. So we don’t use an agency (maybe an idea for the future). I find it not so easy to arrange a gig, especially the promotional aspect is hard.

How do you want the crowd to react on your music? And what is your reaction then?
It’s always a pleasure when the crowd reacts. Even when they only clap their hands, but headbanging, moshing and singing-along are appreciated more of course. When the public shows its appreciation, I usually give myself even more.

Do you believe in human sacrifice of some culture/religion?
I believe some humans are crazy enough for that, yes. It’s without doubt an interesting way to die, but personally, well, it’s not my style.

Your opinion on religion in common? Follow one yourself?
Religion (any kind) is for the weak, for those who need some kind of ‘higher’ spiritual guidance. As long as they don’t trouble anyone, I have no problems with them. The problem arises when people aren’t given another choice, and so are manipulated or even worse… I find that disgusting. So to answer your second question: I don’t belief, I am strictly atheist!

What kind of people do you respect? Which ones not?
Those with an own opinion, which they also can defend in a discussion. So people with a well-reasoned opinion I respect, even if my opinion is opposite. I am very tolerant, if the others are that too of course, hehe.
People who lack all kind of own exclusive personality I disrespect: the sheep so to say. Let the sheep-slaughter begin!! Aaarrgghhh!!!

What is the biggest lack of mankind?
In general? The inability (of the decision-makers) to have a long-term perspective and not to learn from the Past is definitely the most important lack of mankind. Not that I want to promote History, hehe. Also the growing intolerance for ‘the other’ is something that annoys me.

Are you trying to make your environment better? In what way?
First of all, I try not to make it worse! I try to be even with myself, so to say. Sometimes it happens that – on the practical level – an idea of mine can help someone, in that case I’ll give my advice. But I really try always to see the consequences of my acts, and that helps.

The nicest tourist spots in Antwerp?
The rehearsal-room of Gurthang; and besides that the ancient centre of the city is very much worth visiting. Like any Antwerpian I am also proud of our gothic cathedral: a real masterpiece of our so-called ‘dark Middle Ages’. Also the Central Rail station is a lust for the eye, really impressing…

Do you like to visit other cities/countries for culture?
Why not, but mostly I prefer to visit the beautiful nature of other countries, possibly combined with a cultural trip to some city. Those interested in beautiful nature, I can recommend ‘Norge’: impressing, awesome, …

How do you spend your holidays?
Going to some quiet place somewhere in Europe with the tent where I (and preferably my girlfriend and maybe some friends) can spend some time in the green, reading a nice fantasy-novel, eating some delicious food, etc. So really peacefully, with of course (from time to time) a real injection of metal.

How many condoms do you use on those holiday's?
None, my girlfriend takes birth-control-pills, lucky me, hehe.

Do you want to say something important?
GURTHANG plays Eclectic Barbaric Metal exclusively!!

Last rites?
(I survived this crazy amount of questions, cool!) Anyone interested in Gurthang (gig, interview, …) just contact me. Hopefully my answers where interesting enough for thee, otherwise you’re quite stupid to have read this far

Pandemonial Magazine
Hails, Arneriach and Gurthang! How are you guys doing?
Gegroet Finster and all other bang-your-head-dudez! (And where's that hair my tiny friend?) Anyway, Gurthang is alive and kicking, spitting our barbaric assaults every week. We have some interesting things coming up (gigs, recordings), so we keep ourselves quite busy. We're even working on some new tracks…
Our major concern at this very moment is the recording of our debut album, entitled 'The Irony of Death. Chronicles of a Magical Vengeance and an Inevitable Death'
Quite a title eh… quite some work as well, so stay tuned!

You stated the name-change came about because "Gurthang" fitted your music better than "Ecliptica". Has the fact that the last remaining original member, Elyte Empiricae, isn't in the band anymore, something to do with it also?
Our change of name is in fact a logical step in our development as a band. Ecliptica once started as a true blackmetal band, then the style somewhat, but eventually drastically changed to 'melodic, aggressive and technical black/death metal', we call it 'Eclectic Barbaric Metal'. All this because of the changing of musical interests, the improved technical skills and last but not least the constant coming and going of members. Elyte Empiricae once stated: 'Ecliptica is the whore of the Antwerp metal-scene: everyone has been in it…' I guess that's clear!
When we finally found a decent line-up (without any original member) and style we all liked, it was time for us to be consequent and change our name into GURTHANG, the black Iron of death. Ecliptica is history, Gurthang the future!

The name Ecliptica was already fairly well known in Belgium. Don't you think that by changing the name of your band you make it harder on yourself?
Of course, we know that we have made it ourselves not easier, but at the end quality and talent will always be recognized. Besides, most people who liked Ecliptica will like Gurthang as well, since Ecliptica's last release, the demo-cd 'Eclectica', was made by four out of six Gurthang-members. The only major changes are the different use of the bass and keyboard, and also our improved writing-skills. So Gurthang is in fact the upgraded Ecliptica, hehe.

Okay, enough about the name. You recorded a promo recently, which heralds your new release. Care to tell us something more about that?
Well, we have written a full-length concept-album, and we were looking for a label to release that. We thought a promo would be nice to charm the labels, however it actually didn't. We recorded three tracks of the forthcoming album in our rehearsalroom with special computerstuff. Since the result was quite satisfying, we are using the promo, which we have called 'The Avenger - promo 2001', for eh promotional use. Some 'zines, organizers and so on have gotten a promo-package already. More will follow I think.

Will you record the new release in a studio or in the rehearsalroom, because the sound is better on this promo than on any Ecliptica-studio recording, to be honest?
Thanks for the compliment! And yes, we will record our new release in our rehearsalroom. I fear we will have a lot of work to record everything like we want it to be, but eventually the result will be good (I hope). So expect our release 'The Irony of Death' in the beginning of 2002.

A cliché-question, maybe, but since the sound of Gurthang is so diverse; what are your musical influences? Any death/thrash/heavy metal that is really popular within the ranks of Gurthang?
Well, firstly I have to state that all members of the band like metal in general, but there are few bands we all like. I think bands such as Death, Old Man's Child, Dissection we all like. There will be other examples of course.
Personally I prefer the Norwegian black metal and Gothenburg death metal most. Other members like death metal most and so on.

What inspires the lyrics you write? I suppose Tolkien must be of great influence, also judging by the new bandname.
However Gurthang, our new name, comes from the magnificent work of the master of Middle Earth, namely JRR Tolkien, my lyrics are not really influenced by him. This might of course change in the future, since I wrote the lyrics of the upcoming album before we changed our name. My influences are the dark/evil sides of every human. I just start fantasising what would happen when a normal guy is confronted with an extreme situation for example. That is also how I approached our concept story. Someone comes home and finds his world completely ruined… and evil will prevail (most of the times). Now don't get me wrong here: I am not a supporter of evil in general, I just like to write about it… endless inspiration guaranteed! Oh yes.

What occupies you besides the band; movies, books, … ?
I still go to school and have a very nice girlfriend to take care off. When we talk about hobbies, well, than it depends on the mood of the moment. Some periods I am totally into a fantasy-novel, other moments a computer-game (Age of Empires still rules!), but mostly I enjoy listening to one of the fantastic soundscapes I collected during my lifetime. Nothing really special as you might have noticed.

There are a lot of bands in Antwerp, Gurthang for one, that seem to suffer from a constant coming and going of band members. Isn't that extremely frustrating?
I must correct you with this: Gurthang has never ever had members leaving the band! Like I said before: we have a stable line-up now. The opposite was the case with Ecliptica, one of the reasons we changed our name remember. Anyway, I know what you're talking about and yes that is really extremely frustrating. I guess almost every band will recognize this problem. It's just not easy to find a suitable line-up these days and then to keep it together.

Your new bassplayer is Waut from Condamnation. Do they still exist?
You keep on asking me this, hehe. Yes Condamnation still exists, however they are very low profile these days. Tony is writing some promising new songs so stay alert.
And with Waut we finally found the bassplayer we were looking for: he gives our musick the essential groove! In the future he will do some vocals as well. Beware…

What do you think of the Belgian metalscene? Are there enough bands that suit your palate? (Hehe, I always wanted to use that expression…)
I have always liked the Belgian metalscene for its originality and for that special feeling of sadness (probably because of the rainy weather over here). Most bands try to create their own style, not simply copying other bands. For example Signs of Darkness, Black Tears, Rhymes of Destruction, Sfagnum, Ancient Rites or Avatar and Caducity in the past, all create something unique, within the borders of the metalgenre. This diversity and originality makes it of course difficult to sell the Belgian bands to a broader audience (outside Belgium), which reflects on the number of bands that find a decent labeldeal: very few. I guess it's a sad thing. Most Belgian bands that get some promotion are those bands that lack originality: Aborted and Enthroned are the best examples. Of course there's nothing wrong with following a certain style and be good at it, au contraire. But it's always a pity when talent can't find its way to the public!

Right, that's it! Thanks and cheers!! Spill your guts one last time.
All right Finster-dude, thanks for these questions and keep the metal-flame burning! All those interested in Gurthang: contact me asap.
Never forget: The Iron of Dead will soon find thee, hehe. Manaical Greetz, Arneriach on behalf of Gurthang
