We are continuously being asked on the differences = between=20 squarewave, modified square wave and sine wave inverters. And the = benefits of=20 choosing one over the other.

Since the majority of generating sources in Remote Area Power Systems = produce=20 DC current, which is subsequently stored as DC energy in storage = batteries, the=20 use of any AC appliances in these power systems requires the use of an = inverter=20 to convert from DC to AC. As AC appliances are more readily available = and of a=20 lesser cost than DC models, the higher cost of these DC models is = usually=20 weighed against the cost of a DC to AC inverter.

Once the decision has been made to include an inverter in a system, = the=20 customer then has the arduous task of choosing which type and make to = choose.=20

Inverters can be broken down into three general types, relating to = the type=20 of output that they produce. Square Wave, Modified Square Wave and Sine = Wave.=20

Square Wave

The waveform is changed from a square wave to a Sine Wave by the = "wave=20 shaping" component. In the wave shaping section switching devices modify = the=20 wave to the required shape.

Instead of converting the wave to a Sine Wave it may be left as a = square wave=20 but modified to include a zero voltage rest period before the = voltage=20 reverses. These type of inverters are called Modified Square Wave or = modified=20 sine wave.

Modified Square Wave

Square Wave inverters are satisfactorily used for loads which are = either=20 resistive elements or incandescent lighting but they can be a source of=20 overheating and inefficiencies when used to energise transformers and = electric=20 motors.

Sine Wave inverters produce a wave form that closely matches the = mains wave=20 form, and so can run appliances without interferance or over heating. = For=20 example, induction motors can be very noisy on a square wave. It can take twice as long to cook a given meal = in a=20 microwave oven that is powered by a square wave inverter. The advantage = of=20 energy efficient cooking is totally lost when using microwave ovens on = square=20 wave power supplies. For proper and safe operation of personal computers = and=20 electronic equipment, a sine wave power supply is absolutely essential. =
