Ubuntu 6.06LTS can be downloaded from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
Ubuntu 6.06LTS is supported till 2009 It is also possible to request Ubuntu cd's for free

Installing

To install Ubuntu, boot from an ubuntu cd (downloaded or requested) and
follow the install wizard
On this laptop, I had to boot it in safe graphics mode

Post-Install modifications/tweaks

Make sure your distribution is up to date: sudo apt-get update, followed by sudo apt-get upgrade
Install the graphics drivers: sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
edit the Xorg parameter file: sudo nano /etc/X11/Xorg.conf

Find the line 'Driver:ati' or 'vesa' and change it to 'Driver: fglrx'

Xorg.conf needs to be modified after adjusting the videodriver
how:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf find the line Driver: ati (or vesa) and replace it with Driver: fglrx
