Health And Safety At Work - Health and safety in the workplace is one of the most important topics for any business owner, manager, or employee. Although health and safety at work have improved tremendously in the last several years, they still have a long way to go. Every year, thousands of people are injured or killed in avoidable accidents. Not only is it a great humanitarian tragedy, but it also costs a tremendous amount of money in lost wages, health care costs, workers compensation, and collateral expenses. Safety and health management issues in the workplace are responsible for a huge amount of these problems. Simply put, people are lazy. They overlook their responsibilities until someone gets hurt. At that point, it is too late.
There are all kinds of guides and services offered to help improve health and safety at work, but it all basically comes down to one thing: being conscientious. Running a healthy and safe workplace means taking the time to look at how things are done before problems happen. Are there appropriate health and safety warnings on hazardous materials Are there signs to remind people of the proper procedures Have all the employees undergone appropriate health and safety training It might amaze you, but many bosses and managers don’t ask even the simple questions.
To give you just one example, I was recently hired by a firm who had an abysmal construction safety record. The manager couldn’t figure it out. He explained to me that he hired highly qualified people, and he expected them to take care of health and safety at work. He couldn’t figure out for the life of them why things kept happening.
This was a manager who had never instituted any safety procedures, even after a couple of his workers were injured in avoidable accidents. When I asked him why, he said it was too much money, too time consuming, and unnecessary. This despite the fact that he was paying out thousands of dollars every month in workers compensation! If he had taken a few simple steps to protect and safeguard health and safety at work, he never would have had to pay any of that money. Unfortunately, he was so set in his ways that it all went in one ear and out the other. It wasn’t just his employees that suffered either. He lost money And his business lost money as well. When you neglect to take steps to protect health and safety at work, you are ultimately the loser.
