Address Fowarding - When making a move from one home to another, address forwarding is most likely the last thing that crosses your mind. Over the past decade, the postal service has made many changes that allow address forwarding to be a fairly painless and quick process.
A few weeks before the actual move, you will need to fill out your forms for address forwarding. This can be done through your local post office, or more recently it has become available on the USPS website. If you choose to fill out the paperwork at the post office, you can leave the forms there with a small fee payment and the post office will take care of the rest. If you do your address forwarding paperwork online, you will complete the entire process on the website, including making the payment of the small processing fee.
The forms will simply ask what your current address is; the names of recipients, where you would like your mail forwarded and what date you would like the forwarding to start. The listing of the names of recipients is quite convenient for those living with roommates and moving out on their own, because they can specify their name and this will be the only recipient’s mail that will be forwarded from that current household. In addition, choosing the date to start address forwarding is very convenient because the paperwork can be completed weeks ahead of time before the packing and moving starts.
You will receive a receipt from the post office or to print from the website regarding this requested change, and you will want to hold on to this piece of information for the first few days of the address forwarding. Most likely you will have no problems, but should one arise you will need your paperwork to clarify what was requested. Also, you may want to check in with your post office a few days before the requested address forwarding and make sure it is still on the records.
Even though moving is very hectic, address forwarding should not fall by the wayside. It will prove to be quite important for things like credit card bills and paychecks if those are still received by mail. Address forwarding lasts for several months, so it also allows for you to update your address with your credit card companies, doctor’s offices and place of employment in the meantime so you continue to receive important mailings once the address forwarding request runs out.
