Car. (Carlos Vande Neste) is a Belgian artist, though, he prefers to leave it up to others to call him an artist. On account of his innate modesty and shyness he comes across best the better others know him. He studied at the St.-Lucas Instituut in Ghent, where he benefited from training in graphics.
Het Gemeentekrediet, Procter and Gamble and the Ministry of Culture were some of his many clients. The Mister Cash-logo comes from his hand, he created it as an independant designer for a desgn studio . Some of his presentations go back to his 25 years in advertising.
Car. soon felt the need to go farther, sticking to paper (his great love).
His choice here is for 3 divergent paths, which are:
- line drawings
- free graphic work
- photography
(I'm trying to keep this simple, for in reality the disciplines run into one another.)
In his own words: "My line drawings give me the most pleasure; by this I also mean that they comprise my best work. It extends from complete nonsense, poetry, humor to surrealism."
The end result is strong, simple and tasteful. Personally, I would like to classify his <oeuvre> as unique and authentic.
He gladly uses the term "cartoon-like" for his line drawings, which for the most part are to be understood as a form of playing with everyday things, indeed, commonplace things often yield an unexpected source of possibilities.
His work is "minimalist", only the essential is at play (then he draws nothing more)
In the workshop, disorder is in order (no, in disorder ... ha!); drawings everywhere; an older work is often a well of inspiration for a new drawing.
Here aesthetic values are not the final goal, "authenticity" takes its place...could this be the ultimate form of beauty?
An exhibition of Car. is always an amusing to-do, perhaps not exactly in the interest of the gallery owner, but certainly a dream introduction to the "free graphic work" that is better off in the marketplace. This last group is sensitive and subdued. I find it possesses character without being intrusive. The same can be said of the <photographic work>; here too, I find the same principles again: strong and sober, not accidental, all word can contribute to a description of Car. the human being.
