TheoryWith the use of a fresnel lens you can transform you regular monitor into a large, virtual, 3D monitor. It works as follows: you attach a fresnel lens before your monitor in a way that the monitor is between the lens and it's focal point. This will magnify the image and, because it's focused at infinity, will give "depth" to the image. So you get a large, three dimensional image.
The above image might be a bit complicated but all it does is show you how the image is enlarged, the arrow in the monitor is the actual image, the big arrow behind the monitor is the image as you see it. You can calculate the size of the image with the magnification formula on the "How do lenses work"-page
The 3D-effectYou would expect that the lens just enlarges the image but, as stated above, it also creates a 3D-effect that can be quite astonishing. Since the image is large and far away (focussed at infinity) your brain interprets it as being real 3D and you can see objects pop out when looking at movies or playing video games. With first person shooters like Half Life 2 or Doom 3 it looks fabulous, especially the gun looks real and has a lot of depth. This wil allow you to get totaly 'merged in' in the scene. |
