Theory

This is a good alternative if you don't have an LCD laying around somewhere (if you do, it might be better to see the "LCD projector"-section of this site) but you do have a small TV.
It works as follows: The TV sends the image true the fresnel lens which projects the image on a wall or a piece of cloth.

I haven't tried this yet because you use the fresnel lens as an objective here which may cause you to see some of the circles from the lens on the projected image. Also, you will need to set the brightness of your TV on the maximum. Even with the brightness on maximum, you will still need to darken the room as much as possible to be able to reach large images.
As I said before, i haven't tried this type of projector myself, but if you decide to give it a try, please let me know what the results are.
