What are fresnel lenses?

Fresnel lenses are lenses that are made by dividing the lens into circles and then applying the normal curve of a lens in that spot to the circle (see picture).

On the left is a fresnel lens, on the right is a regular lens.

The advantage of this is that the lens is a lot more flat and weighs a lot less.
