Geboren te Antwerpen op 6 september 1943 waar hij zijn humaniora afmaakte aan het Koninklijk Atheneum. Vervolgens trok hij naar de Lierse Normaalschool met het oog een loopbaan in het wiskunde onderwijs op te bouwen. Zijn droom om Zeevaartschool te volgen en "kapitein" te worden werd hem uit het hoofd gepraat. Reeds snel begreep hij dat het onderwijs hem geen voldoening kon schenken en zocht opnieuw naar een loopbaan als zeeman. Hij koos voor een loopbaan bij de Marine waar hij zowel zijn nautische- als zijn officiers vorming kreeg. Een juiste keuze zoals zou blijken. Als jong officier heeft hij zowat alle functies aan boord van diverse varende eenheden doorlopen en zo een ruime ervaring als wachtlopend zeeofficier opgedaan. Daarna bekwaamde zich in alle aspecten van het duiken en werd als ontmijner, specialist in het demonteren van allerhande springtuigen. Hij volgde diverse gespecialiseerde opleidingen in binnen- en buitenland en zetelde in diverse NAVO werkgroepen. Van de twaalf jaar die hij op zee volbracht, voerde hij zes jaar bevel over diverse eenheden. Meest markant waren zijn bevelvoering over het visserijwachtschip Rochefort in de tijd van de "tongenoorlog" en het bevel over de hoogzeemijnenjager Breydel, waarmee hij in 1987 naar de Golf trok. Begin 1988 ontving hij uit hande van de Britse Koningin, voor zijn persoonlijke inzet tijdens de redding van de slachtoffers van de Herald Of Free Enterprise, de Queen's.Gallantry.Medal. Hij zal zijn aktieve militaire loopbaan afsluiten in 1994 als Commandant van de Groep Duikers Ontmijners , een eenheid waar hij vele jaren met hart en ziel aan verbonden was. Hij is nu Korvetkapitein in het kader van de hogere reserveofficieren. Als erkentelijkheid ontving hij van de Nederlandstalige Liga voor Onderwater Sport.tevens het brevet HC 3 ster instructeur Op dit ogenblik verblijft hij geregeld in de Dominicaanse Republiek, waar hij zich verder bezig houdt met zijn passie: duiken en beleggen. Hij kan uren vertellen over zijn ervaringen op zee en neemt de neofiet 's nachts graag mee op een sterrekundige ontdekkingstocht langs de hemel.

In Antwerp, where he was born on the 6th of September 1943, he finished grammar school at the Royal Athenaeum. Afterwards he studied mathematics to start a career as a teacher. His dream to become a "captain" at sea was dissuaded at an early stage. Soon however he understood that an educational career was not going to give him full satisfaction at all. He returned to his first vocation and applied to join the Navy as an officer. He graduated at the Nautical School and the Minewarfare School. This proved to be the right decision for him. As a junior officer he fulfilled almost all kind of jobs in many different commissioned vessels. Afterwards he was trained as an expert in all aspects of diving and volunteered to become a bomb disposal specialist. In the Belgian coastal area, at land and at sea, he became a celebrity as a result of his numerous interventions. He attended many specialised courses, national as well as international, and was a member of different NATO working parties. He has spent twelve years at sea. Half of this period he acted as a captain. Most impressive was his command of the fishery protection ship BNS Rochefort, during the "sole war" in the North Sea and his command of BNS Breydel during the Gulf War in 1987. Early 1988, Queen Elisabeth II herself awarded him the Queen's Gallantry Medal for his personal efforts in the rescue of the victims during the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster outside Zeebrugge. He finishes his military career in 1994 as Superintendent of Diving and Commander of the Navy Clearance divers. An operational unit he always has been very much attached to. He now is Commander in the Royal Belgian Navy Reserve In appreciation of his career as a diver, the Flemish League for Sub-aqua Sports awarded him the CMAS 3 star instructor HC certificate. At this moment he often stays in the Dominican Republic where he still is involved in diving and runs a consultancy company. He can talk for hours about his life at sea and likes to invite the neophyte on a star discovery trip at night |

Tambien era conocido, su comando del buque M 906 Breydel durante la guerra del Golfo en 1987. A principio de 1988, la reina Elisabeth II, le concedió personalmente la medalla "Queen's Gallantry Medal" por sus esfuerzos personales en el rescate de las víctimas del desastre del "Herald of Free Enterprise" fuera de Zeebrugge. Él acabo su carrera militar en el 1994 como el Superintendente de Buseo y Comandante del Grupo de Buseadores y Desarmadores de la marina. Era la unidad operativa con la cual le gustaba trabajar. Actualmente el es Comandante en la reserva de la marina real belga. La liga flamenca de los deportes sub-acuaticos le concedió el certificado de instructor 3 estrellas HC de CMAS por su carrera como buseador militar. En este momento él permanece en la República Dominicana en donde él todavía está implicado en el buseo y dirige a menudo una compañía de consultas. Él puede hablar por horas sobre su vida de navigador y le gusta invitar al neófito a conocer de los secretos de las estrellas. |
