Naslagwerken
over Stephen King
Stephen Kings immens oeuvre
wordt eigenlijk alleen maar overtroffen door de boeken en artikels die over
hem geschreven zijn. De meeste daarvan zijn louter van diverterende aard;
in academische kringen wordt er over het algemeen immers nogal neergekeken
op schrijvers die, zoals King, traditioneel tot het populaire genre worden
gerekend. Om het met de woorden van Michael R. Collings te zeggen: "King
is too unsophisticated, too peripheral to what is really important in the
universe, too common for students to waste their time on" (Of
Books and Reputations). Toch is het tij stilaan aan het keren.
Collings - zelf professor aan de Pepperdine University in Malibu - doceert
over King in zijn cursussen over horror, sciencefiction en fantasy en
schreef diverse studies over King en zijn belang in de horrorliteratuur.
In zijn voetspoor verschenen ook publicaties bij onder meer de Bowling
Green State University, Worcester State College, Loyola College en Andrews
and McNeel. Greenwood Press publiceerde in 1992 een verzameling essays
geschreven door Amerikaanse universiteitsprofessoren. In België staat de
King-studie nog in zijn kinderschoenen. Toch verschenen er aan de
Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven bijvoorbeeld al eindverhandelingen over
spanning en manipulatie in het werk van King (1988), over zijn status als
jeugdschrijver (1994), over de sociale motieven in zijn romans (1995) en
over enkele gotische thema's in zijn werk (1997).
Het is onmogelijk om op
deze webpagina's een volledig overzicht te geven van álles wat er ooit
over Stephen King geschreven is. De inmiddels tien jaar oude
King-bibliografie die Richard Collings in 1991 samenstelde, bevat zomaar
eventjes drieduizend titels. Stel je voor hoeveel er dat vandaag
zouden zijn! Er is wellicht zoveel over King geschreven, dat geen mens het
in één mensenleven gelezen krijgt. Jammer genoeg haalt de kwantiteit het
vaak op de kwaliteit. Het gros van de secundaire literatuur over King is
verschenen in populaire magazines, waarin de schrijvers zich meestal
beperken tot een beknopte samenvatting van de korte inhoud en een korte
paragraaf met een persoonlijke appreciatie of depreciatie van het boek.
Toch zijn er de laatste jaren enkele erg interessante boeken over King
verschenen, die eigenlijk niet op de boekenplank van de echte fan zouden
mogen ontbreken. Het zijn deze waardevolle naslagwerken die we hier
opsommen. De boeken staan alfabetisch gerangschikt op auteur. Het ligt in
onze bedoeling om deze lijst mettertijd uit te breiden en een bespreking
per boek te voorzien.
