Indian grocers are widely found in USA. San Jose, in California is the best example of grocers who cater to both the North Indian and South Indian community equally. Perhaps, there are more similar places across USA which we are not aware of.
Recently, Indian groceries are finding places in the shelves of many European supermarkets.
In UK, you can find almost everything, including paneer, the Indian cottage cheese, in Tesco. It is interesting to note that a large number of food companies packing Indian products are found in Britain. In fact, Tilda basmati rice is in the international market for more than a decade and is well known for its premium quality. There are even food development consultants in UK, to help manufacturers develop authentic Indian food for leading supermarket chains like Tesco, Sainsbury and Safeway.
Those who are looking for small onions (shallots) to make ulli sambar (vengaya sambar) will find these onions in a Thai shop or Chinese shop.
But, south Indians who are looking for parboiled ponni rice for idli or dosa will have to find a Srilankan shop. There is a street full of Indian groceries, mainly run by Srilankan Tamil community in Paris near the Gare du Nord. There you will also find almost all the south Indian vegetables, like drum stick, snake gourd, ash gourd.
