Walking-weekend in Voeren

On a very foggy saturday morning in April 2002 Ann and I drove to Voeren (De Voerstreek to be correct) for a walking weekend. This weekend was organised by Kompas, a non-commercial travel-organisation.

De Voerstreek is a Flemish enclave in the east of Belgium, squeezed between the Walloon province of Liège and the Netherlands. The six villages of De Voerstreek are Moelingen, ’s-Gravenvoeren, Sint-Martens-Voeren, Sint-Pieters-Voeren, Teuven and Remersdaal. Legendary in modern Belgian history were the troubles around this little enclave in the middle of nowhere. Actually it was a part of the French-speaking province of Liège but it has been turned over to the Dutch-speaking province of Limburg, despite fierce protest from the French-speaking commune. The overpainted Dutch signs on the streets are silent witnesses of the French protest.

The first day we made a walk in the neighbourhood of De Planck, crossing the Dutch border several times and ending in the charming little village Teuven. After a refreshment in herberg Moeder De Gans we did another short walk. We stayed overnight in the Shetlandhoeve, an old farm in Sint-Martens-Voeren and the next day we made a long walk in the neighbourhood.
