I
found the term the first (and only) time in a scientific magazine called
"KIJK" about ten years ago. An additional article to a feature on geography
mentioned a mysterious breed of people whose hobby it is to draw maps of
strange and non-existent worlds. The most popular of these maps are of
course found in fantasy books like "Lord of the Rings", "The Wheel of Time",
"The Belgariad" a.s.o.
Usually
these maps are either drawn by the author himself or by a professional
artist.
According
to the article however there appear to be an astonishing number of amateur
artists who have no means of displaying their work to a larger audience.
Again according to the author of abovementioned article mostly because geofantasts
are supposedly a shy breed who are ashamed of what they do,
thinking it a childish thing.
HE
may think so. I don't. YOU can of course make up your own mind.
Since then things have radically changed. We're not the only site anymore. Not by a long shot. We even weren't the first. Why did we think so ? Because the term we used (and consequently also used to search for others) is Geofantasy. For some reason or other the others use the term Geofiction. What's in a name...
So : if you want to visit other Geofantasy (or geofiction) sites these are quite nice starting points : http://www.geofictie.nl and the Imaginary Countries Webring.
The pics we already gathered are divided into two groups : Damiens' own maps (which you will find under "Terra") and maps from others.
Why don't you go and take a look ? That's what you're here for, isn't it ?
