San
Juan de los Terreros lies on the eastern fringes of Andalucia on the Costa
Calida. The 'Warm Coast' is protected from the cold winds by a mountain range
and has the mildest climate through the whole of the Spanish peninsula with
daytime temperatures rarely falling below 15 degrees even in winter.
The
nearest town is Aguilas (5 miles). Hornillo
Wharf, where iron was loaded for shipping still stands, a reminder that this was
once a 19th century mining town. In the center of Aguilas you must visit the
lovely gardens in the Plaza España, the 19th century Town Hall and the
impressive church of San José. In the high part of the old quarter stands the
castle of San Juan de Aguilas, built in 1579. At the foot of the castle is the harbor
and a typical lighthouse. The coastline here offers excellent diving. While golf courses are planned in Aguilas as well as San Juan you will find a selection of courses in the area: Desert Springs Cuevas del Almanzora 18km, the only desert course on the mainland, Valle del Este Golf Resort -Vera (18km), Mojácar (27km) et Turre 35km.
Nearby in Vera there is an aquapark, many restaurants and some nice shops. Corrida's are sometimes held here. Vera is also one of the well known Almerian municipalities for nudism. Mojacar, just a 10 minutes drive from Garrucha, is visible from many miles away. In the 15th Century the town was permitted by the Reyes Catholics to retain its Moorish culture, which is still apparent today. A maze of Moorish arches, narrow winding cobbled streets and stairways climbing up and down the steep mountainside. Full of artisan shops and commercial and artistic life by day and a lively meeting point with bars and restaurants at night. You mustn’t leave Mojácar without visiting the Plaza de Parterre, the Town Hall Square, Calle Jazmín, Calle Estación Vieja, the Jewish quarter or Arrabal, the Luciana arch, Plaza Nueva - where you must stop to see the view of the Valle de las Pirámides (Pyramid Valley) - and the church of the Incarnation, in a little square which also contains a monument to the women of Mojácar. All along the coast there are many secluded sandy beaches and isolated coves where you can relax and enjoy the warm sun and the bluest of seas.
To the north, past Aguilas a 55 km
drive leads to Puerto Mazarron, a seaside resort town with a lively nightlife.
You must visit the fishing port and the fish auction. The local coastline offers
splendid beaches and unspoiled coasts. You may also want to see the hot
springs and the gun batteries at Cabo
Tinoso Excursions can be made to to Granada, Almeria and Mini- Hollywood. For skiers the awesome Sierra Nevada ski area is only 3 hours away. |
