Savings Account - One of the best things you can do for your child is to get them a savings account when they are very young. This is something that anyone can do, even if you think you don’t have a lot of money to put into it. You don’t have to add a lot of money, even five dollars a month can add up in the long run. If you have family that doesn’t know what to get your child for a special occasion, you can also ask them to contribute to the account for your child’s future.
A savings account many not have the same interest rate as a money market account, but it is a good place to start. Money left in the account over the course of your child’s younger years can earn more than you can probably imagine. They may end up with quite a nice sum in their savings account once they turn eighteen. This might be something they want to invest to make more money, or they may want to use it for college. With college tuition being what it is, every little bit helps.
Make sure you have your child’s name on their savings account, but don’t forget to have yours. If you have a will, make sure you name someone to take care of the account until children are old enough to take care of it themselves. If you have a savings account for your child and something happens to you, the new guardian or other parent may have access to the account and you never know what someone might do. Your child may never see their money.
If you find that your child’s savings account has accumulated a lot more money they you thought it would, you should consider getting something like a money market account that has a higher interest rate. The money market account is much like a savings account except it has a higher rate of earning, and you usually have to maintain a minimum balance. You can even put part of it into a money market account and leave the rest in savings. If you aren’t sure what to do, talk with someone at your bank about what you want to do with the money, and they can suggest the best course of action for you and your child. Remember, even a few dollars a week can make a difference once your child turns eighteen. You may have given them the security you may have never had.
