The oddly named EL LOCO started out in October of 1984, albeit then still under their original moniker of SCARVILLE. Instigators were bassist Frank Verdier (ex IRON GREY) and drummer Frank 'Loco' Van Den Eynde (ex METAL AXE, ex NO ESCAPE). Guitarist Michel Van Keerbergen was the next member to join forces. PHANTOM guitarist Frans De Backer joined in for some rehearsals as well, but in the end he returned to his first love, after the problems that had started to arise within PHANTOM had been solved. In December of 1984 Dirk Fierens joined SCARVILLE as their second guitarist. And in January of 1985, with the arrival of vocalist Denis Hagels, SCARVILLE's line-up was complete at last .
With this line-up SCARVILLE performed live twice, and shortly thereafter guitarist Dirk Fierens was let go. Nothing much happened with the band for a couple of months, but by August of 1985 the bandname had been changed to EL LOCO. In September of 1985 EL LOCO were fortunate to be able to replace IRON GREY at the Giants Of Metal festival at Zaal Lux in Herenthout. Other bands on the bill that day were openers XIRONIX, EXPLORER, TRIAL, PARIAH and England's BLIND FURY. And as the band still hadn't found a replacement for Dirk Fierens, they were lucky to be able to persuade Frans De Backer to return to their ranks for this occasion. In those days EL LOCO played originals such as Zombies, Here To Stay and Realize, as well as covers by the likes of BLACK SABBATH, JUDAS PRIEST and TWISTED SISTER. Plans to record a demo had already been made as well.
Last thing that I'm aware of is that EL LOCO was on the lookout for a permanent second guitarist and a new vocalist after this show. As a matter of fact, vocalist Denis Hagels would later resurface in AXEL, in 1986.
