Rugveren breed lancetvormig, zwart met witte zoompjes. Vleugeldekveren met groot wit veld, spiegel zwart met groene weerschijn. Flanken roestrood, buik en staart­dekveren wit, staart zwart. Snavel en poten loodgrijs. Habitat: ondiepe meren en moerassen op de pampa. Trekvogel. Houden:aanbevelenswaard als siereend, vreed­zaam, niet veeleisend, winterhard. Beide seksen dragen hele jaar het prachtkleed. Ook geschikt voor kleine tuinvijvers, maar een gazon mag niet ontbreken. Fokken:eenvoudig; broedhokjes dicht bij het water plaatsen. Woerd houdt de wacht bij broedend wijfje. Broedtijd: begin april; eieren 6-11, izabelkieurig. Broedduur24-25 dagen. Kuikens zeer zelfstandig, nemen direct voedsel op. Beide ouders verzorgen het kroost, iets ongewoons bij grondeleenden. Ongepaarde woerden nemen graag kuikens van andere soorten op en verzorgen die voorbeeldig. Jonge dieren krijgen in de herfst van het le levensjaar het volwassen kleed. Meestal geslachtsrijp in het voorjaar van het 2e levensjaar. Description:This duck is 17 to 21 inches long and weighs about two pounds. The adult males have a head that is mostly iridescent green to blackish, except for a white to mottled white face patch in front of the eyes and a smaller whitish mark near the ears. His breast is a scalloped black and white and the underparts and tail coverts are white to yellowish white grading to rusty chestnut on the upper flanks. His tail is black and the back and scapular feathers are mostly black, with broad white barring or the margins. The upper wing coverts are mostly pure white and the primaries are brown. His speculum is velvety black with a greenish sheen and is bordered anteriorly with a black bar on the greater coverts. His iris is brown, the bill is bluish with a black tip, and the legs and feet are gray. The females closely resemble the males, but are somewhat duller throughout, especially on the head, and have mottling on their lesser wing coverts. The breeding range extends from Tierra Del Fuego to Atacama province in Chile, to Cordoba province and Buenos Aires in Argentina, also parts of Uruguay and southern Brazil. In cold winter, migration occurs from the colder southern regions with the limit of the wintering range extending north to Paraguay and Brazil. The nest is a depression in the ground, concealed in vegetation. The hen lays six to nine creamy-white eggs, average size 2.26 by 1.56 inches. The males share the task of caring for the young. The ducklings are dark brown above, paler below, with a black crown and a black line behind the eyes.
