Golden anniversary of cerritos college

Cerritos College - Cerritos College is getting set to celebrate fifty years of serving students and the communities of Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, La Mirada, and Norwalk, California.

The state and locally supported two-year college was founded in 1956 as part of the California Community College system and now has nearly 25,000 co-ed undergraduate students - including some from thirty two foreign countries - in a non-competitive educational system on a 140-acre campus within easy reach of Los Angeles. Almost 40% of its faculty of 700 is full time.

Students major in over one hundred fields from computer science (there are over 400 computers on campus for student use) to business administration and wildlife management, with California students paying no tuition fees.

Special study options include academic remediation for entering students, adult continuing-education programs, advanced placement credit, English as a second language, part-time degree program, services for LD students, study abroad, summer session for credit.

Student life at Cerritos College is varied and activities include a drama/theater group, student-run newspaper and a radio station. Its library holds more than 80,000 books available to students.

Cerritos College is also a member of the NJCAA. And onscholarship sports: include baseball, basketball, cross-country running, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo, wrestling. Intercollegiate sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country running, football, golf, soccer, softball, and swimming. tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling.

Combining a friendly spirit of competition with community goodwill, Cerritos College hosts its annual Turkey Trot each November. To enter the two-mile walk/run, participants must donate one canned food item, which is then provided to the Norwalk Community Council’s Holiday Food Basket Program for needy families in the Norwalk area. Each year, the event raises nearly 1,000 cans from its 200-plus participants, each of whom receive a commemorative Cerritos College Turkey Trot t-shirt.
