Classroom Jobs - Nothing teaches children responsibility and prepares them for the "real" world quite like assigning Classroom Jobs at an early stage of their development.
Most elementary school teachers are surprised by their young students’ enthusiasm for helping with any little thing. Every hand shoots into the air when volunteers are called for Classroom Jobs as simple as pencil sharpening. But as Classroom Jobs carry more complexity, greater social responsibility is subconsciously instilled.
Both students and teachers love Classroom Jobs. Students love this system because they will be responsible for a certain task that helps the classroom as a whole. Teachers appreciate it because, not only will assigning Classroom Jobs eliminate a few small tasks from their ’to-do’ lists, but they can also watch the children rise to the occasion and nurture a giving work ethic.
If you want to successfully assign Classroom jobs, tell the students that, soon, they will have the opportunity to apply for a list of volunteer tasks. Give them a few examples of the types of jobs that are available and watch their eyes light up as they imagine themselves as the junior kings or queens of a certain domain of the classroom.
Make it clear that, when they accept a job, they will have to take it seriously and if they do not meet their commitments, they can and will be "fired" from their Classroom Job. Make this announcement a few days before your plan to formally introduce the Classroom Jobs program so that you can build anticipation and portray the importance of Classroom Jobs.
There are scores of small things that need to be done to run a successful and efficient classroom. Ideally, you should have one job for each student in your class. If you have large classes, you may decide to introduce a Classroom Jobs Rota system.
