Georgia High School Sport - The box office smash "friday Night Lights" - the story of a high school football-obsessed town in Texas - will put the focus back on Georgia High School Sport, one of the most sports crazy states in the Union.
"high school sports, especially football, are the fiber of a lot of towns," said H.G. (Buzz) Bissinger, author of the book and the cousin of Peter Berg, the film’s director.
"there are pockets all over the country where it’s true. You look at a town like Valdosta, Georgia, with a museum dedicated to the high school football program. It’s so big in the South."
Bissinger’s book and the movie paints the starring football team, the Permian High Panthers, in a disturbing light. Players, high school seniors, being discarded by the community after their football days were over, along with blatant racism, are a constant theme of that takes the reader through the 1988 season.
Plus, Bissinger examines an educational system that pushed players through, regardless of academic achievement if they could block, tackle or run. But Georgia High School Sport still runs well behind education if local education authorities are to be believed.
On the flip side of Bissinger’s story is a recent book by a former quarterback, Bill Lightle, who played Georgia High School Sport during the turbulent, racially charged late 1960s and early 1970s.
Lightle, holder of a master’s degree in history and another in education, tells a different story, from a different time with a different message in his book, "made or Broken, Football & Survival in the Georgia Woods." For him, Georgia High School Sport helped unify a town, Albany, where segregation was a way of life and the races rarely mixed - except on the football field.
