Hampton University - Hampton University opened its doors during the days of Reconstruction at the close of the Civil War when, in 1868, it was founded as Hampton Normal and Agricultural institute to prepare young African-Americans to teach a people newly freed from slavery.
Now, Hampton University offers doctoral degrees in nursing and physics, the doctor of physical therapy and the Pharm. D. in pharmacy. In recent years, Hampton University has also added dozens of programs to offer students more choices among academic majors and professional careers, including music engineering technology, marine and environmental science, entrepreneurial studies, and sports management.
Comprised of six schools - Business, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts and Education, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Science, - a Graduate College, and a College of Continuing Education, Hampton University also offers thirty-eight bachelor degree programs, fourteen master degree programs, over and above the four previously mentioned doctoral or professional degrees.
And a student-to-faculty ratio of sixteen-to-one provides for more personalized instruction and advisement for each student, enabling Hampton University to more effectively track and support individual student progress.
Since its founding on the banks of the Virginia Peninsula by Brigadier General Samuel Chapman Armstrong - the son of missionary parents - Hampton University has sought to instill in its students the precepts of efficiency, character and service to society-standards that continue to remain both timeless and relevant.
In 1878, Hampton established a formal education program for Native Americans, beginning the Institute’s lasting commitment to serving a multicultural population. Hampton University’s historic Native American education program spanned more than forty years, with the last student graduating in 1923. Recent initiatives have attracted Native American students to renew their ties with Hampton.
In 1984, Hampton’s Board of Trustees formally adopted a university structure and changed the name to Hampton University, which today represents an unparalleled standard of excellence in American higher education.
