Golden memories: high school rings

High School Rings - A special High School Ring is a way of carrying the pride of youth with you into the future - a symbol of the achievements that formed your character and prepared you for life.

It’s an American tradition, one all but unknown in Europe where - in England, for instance - the ’old school tie’ has traditionally been worn through life by those who were educated at elite ’public’ schools like Eton and Harrow. The school necktie works as magically as a secret Masonic handshake in some circles.

But America has High School Rings - something to establish an important part of your history even if you’re wearing nothing more formal than a T-shirt and jeans.

The tradition is thought to have begun in universities and colleges back in the early 19th century and quickly caught on with high school students who often exchanged them with pals and girlfriends as a pledge of loyalty.

Now High School Rings are big business with some custom-made, jewel-encrusted golden bands costing hundreds or even thousands of dollars. But more common High School Rings bearing a school crest and/or motto run to only a few weeks’ pocket money and are bought by the million every school year.

Old and rare High School rings are now a hot collector item and change hands for high prices in clubs, at auctions and on the Internet

Often, though, they are too precious to sell. Treasured memories of youth and friendship are associated with them, and High School rings are often adjusted in size to be exchanged as engagement and wedding rings for couples who found love at school.

The rings are also ice-breakers between strangers in strange lands. Many wearers have reported re-establishing old friendships or making new ones decades after leaving school when matching High School Rings were spotted in distant countries.
