Indiana State University - Indiana State Normal School opened its doors on January 6 1870 to just twenty-three students and a faculty of three.
By 1929 it had grown to be the Indiana State Teachers College, in 1960, Indiana State College - and in 1965 it gained the prestigious title, Indiana State University.
Indiana State University now boasts more than 11,000 students and more than 71,000 alumni throughout the United States and around the world.
They’ve all been exposed to a high-quality educational experience in a welcoming, student-centered learning environment.
At Indiana State University, academic and social opportunities are limitless, with more than 100 majors, small classes (80 percent of which are taught by full-time faculty) and more than 120 clubs and activities to choose from.
Indiana State University also offers a variety of first-year programs designed to help students make a successful transition to college life, including special advising and orientation programs, first-year seminars and learning communities.
Although Indiana State University was founded as a school for the preparation of teachers and recently received a $3.5 million government grant to enhance its teachers’ training program, today the institution is much more than that. Excellent teachers and school administrators are still produced, but graduates are also leading the way in the areas such as insurance, aerospace, packaging technology, nursing and the sciences.
Based in Terre Haute, Indiana State University boasts that it is "committed to providing tomorrow’s leaders and innovators."
But as it helps carve out new tomorrows, Indiana State University with its proud book-and-torch symbol of knowledge and truth keeps a sentimental eye on yesterday. The institution and its students are seeped in history and tradition with founders’ days, unique school songs, parades and special ceremonies to honour past members of the faculty and students and special events in its history.
