For god and country: john carroll high school

John Carroll High School - John Carroll High School - or the John Carroll Catholic High School to give it its full title - places great weight on the value of religion in education.

With its Pro Deo et Patria (For God and Country) motto, it is a member of the National Catholic Education Association, and the John Carroll High School handbook states: "christ is at the centre of our community."

Enhancing spiritual growth through religion classes, retreats, weekly school-wide Masses, daily prayers, community service, and the interweaving of a faith-filled experience throughout the school day plays a large part in the John Carroll High School approach to student development.

Fifty years of tradition and the philosophy of mission expressed in the John Carroll High School handbook says that students, faculty and parents participate in the formation of spiritual programs as well as outstanding general programs that offer students a complete high school experience and opportunities to develop into well-rounded young people.

John Carroll High School is an extraordinary institution with a beautiful campus set high on a hill in Southwest Birmingham, Alabama, with a devoted faculty and staff of seventy and a diverse student body of 750.

Achieving its mission of education and formation of young people through strong academic programs, a rich variety of extracurricular activities, and a discipline system that encourages self-responsibility; John Carroll High School claims among its 9.000 alumni, a Nobel Prize winner (Eric Wieschaus, Medicine, 1995) and a Heisman Trophy winner (Pat Sullivan, Auburn, 1971).

John Carroll High School reflects the local community’s diversity; in races, cultures, religions, family backgrounds, and socio-economic groups. A recent school report says: "our students’ learning, praying, co-operating, competing, and sharing their lives with those who are similar and those who are different provides an excellent foundation for college, for work, and for life in the real world."
